Knowledge and Practice of Antibiotic Management and Prudent Prescribing among Polish Medical Doctors

Wojciech Stefan Zgliczynski et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the knowledge and practices of Polish doctors regarding antimicrobial prescribing and antibiotic resistance. The results showed that most doctors were aware of the side effects of antibiotics, the inability of antibiotics to treat viruses, the link between unnecessary use of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance, and the possibility of healthy individuals carrying resistant bacteria. However, only a small percentage of respondents knew that the use of antibiotics as growth stimulants in livestock is illegal in the EU. Some doctors also reported a lack of appropriate materials for antimicrobial resistance counseling.

Construction of a patient decision aid for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection in primary care

Yves-Marie Vincent et al.

Summary: This study developed a patient decision aid (PtDA) for shared decision-making between practitioners and women in primary care settings regarding the use of antibiotics in uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI). The PtDA includes information on uUTI, treatment options, benefits, risks, and consequences, based on literature review, and considers patient values and preferences in decision-making. The need for shared decision-making and the importance of equipoise in this situation were confirmed.

Healthcare workers' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours with respect to antibiotics, antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance across 30 EU/EEA countries in 2019

Diane Ashiru-Oredope et al.

Summary: The survey found that healthcare workers generally have a higher knowledge of antibiotics and their use compared to antibiotic resistance. Most healthcare workers reported receiving information on avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use, but only a small percentage provided resources to patients. Fear of patient deterioration or complications was the most common reason for prescribing unnecessary antibiotics.

Summary: The study in Laos revealed that many healthcare providers lack adequate knowledge about antibiotic use and resistance, leading to unnecessary prescription of antibiotics. Only a small percentage of HCPs participated in antibiotic education programs. Continuous education and regular supervision of HCPs are crucial in improving antibiotic use related to pregnancy, childbirth, and young children.

Knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance among final year undergraduate medical and pharmacy students at three universities in East Africa

Margaret Lubwama et al.

Summary: Proper measures to combat antimicrobial resistance development and spread are crucial in Sub Saharan Africa, where a significant burden of antimicrobial resistance is projected by 2050. This study evaluated the knowledge, attitude, and perception of final year medical and pharmacy students on antimicrobial use and resistance at three universities in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Results showed that final year students have low scores in knowledge about antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use in clinical scenarios, indicating a need for improved training in antimicrobial stewardship programs.

Tomasz Sobierajski et al.

Summary: The study conducted among medical students at the Medical University of Warsaw revealed that the students are aware of the dangers of antibiotic resistance, particularly due to misuse of antibiotics. They recognize their knowledge gaps and advocate for more education on antibiotic therapy in the curriculum. Additionally, there are varying attitudes towards antibiotics among students, with some rejecting antibiotics prescribed by doctors based on their knowledge.

Impact of guidelines on antibiotic prescribing approach in primary care-a 10-year study

Nives Radosevic Quadranti et al.

Summary: The study showed that concomitant chronic disease was the most important factor influencing physician's decision to prescribe an antimicrobial drug. While the majority of physicians declared themselves as rational prescribers, more than half of them sometimes prescribed antibiotics even without indication. Self-reported adherence to guidelines increased over time, indicating the need for further improvement in communication skills and reduction in 'just in case' antibiotic prescribing.
