Variable selection for estimating individual tree height using genetic algorithm and random forest

Evandro Nunes Miranda et al.

Summary: A hybrid method combining genetic algorithms for variables selection and random forest for fitting models of individual tree heights was proposed and compared with other methods using a dataset of 5,608 trees and 189 environmental variables. The optimal set of variables included breast height diameter ratio, competition index, dominant height, soil silt, and boron content, with the proposed hybrid method achieving comparable accuracy in estimating tree heights. The study suggests that this modelling approach could have broader applications in forestry and ecological science.

Hyperspectral imaging technology coupled with human sensory information to evaluate the fermentation degree of black tea

Ting An et al.

Summary: This research aimed to evaluate the fermentation degree of black tea using hyperspectral imaging technology. Sensory information including taste, vision, and olfactory was collected, and different data fusion strategies combined with the support vector machine algorithm were used to establish a fermentation degree discrimination model. The model performance using data fusion strategy was better than that using single information, achieving a high accuracy for the prediction set.

k-means clustering and kNN classification based on negative databases

Dongdong Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on privacy protection during k-means clustering and kNN classification by introducing Negative databases (NDB) and proposing a new NDB generation algorithm (QK-hidden algorithm) to control the accuracy of distance estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms could achieve significant improvements in clustering and classification performance compared to existing works.

Hyperspectral imaging in combination with data fusion for rapid evaluation of tilapia fillet freshness

Hai-Dong Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of two different hyperspectral imaging systems, Vis-NIR and NIR, in determining TVB-N contents in tilapia fillets during cold storage. By comparing the calibration models established with variable selection and data fusion methods, it was found that low-level fusion data based variable selection methods resulted in superior models. Mid-level fusion data, particularly based on CARS, achieved the best model. Ultimately, the study demonstrated the great feasibility of hyperspectral imaging combined with data fusion analysis for nondestructive evaluation of tilapia fillet freshness.

Maturity determination of single maize seed by using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging coupled with comparative analysis of multiple classification models

Zheli Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized NIR-HSI technology and various modeling methods to classify the maturity of maize seeds, with the PLS-DA model based on feature wavelengths selected from T2 spectra achieving the optimal results. The results demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral imaging technology for rapid and accurate classification of maize seed maturity.

An electronic nose supported by an artificial neural network for the rapid detection of aflatoxin B1 and fumonisins in maize

Marco Camardo Leggieri et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential use of an electronic nose for rapid identification of mycotoxin contamination in maize samples and found that it had high accuracy in distinguishing contamination levels above or below legal limits. Artificial neural network (ANN) was the best method with 78% and 77% accuracy for AFB1 and FBs, respectively, indicating that the e-nose supported by ANN could be a rapid and reliable tool for mycotoxin detection.
