Morphological variation and phylogeny of Karenia selliformis (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in an intensive cold-water algal bloom in eastern Hokkaido, Japan

Mitsunori Iwataki et al.

Summary: Although harmful algal blooms resulting in mass mortalities of marine organisms are rare in Hokkaido, a recent prolonged cold-water bloom in the eastern coast of Hokkaido caused significant mortalities of various marine species. This study examined the morphology and phylogeny of dominant and co-occurring unarmored dinoflagellates in the bloom and identified Karenia selliformis as the dominant species. The study also found co-occurrences of other kareniacean dinoflagellates.

SHIMIELLA GEN. NOV. AND SHIMIELLA GRACILENTA SP. NOV. (DINOPHYCEAE, KARENIACEAE), A KLEPTOPLASTIDIC DINOFLAGELLATE FROM KOREAN WATERS AND ITS SURVIVAL UNDER STARVATION

Jin Hee Ok et al.

Summary: A small dinoflagellate of approximately 13 μm in cell length was isolated from Jinhae Bay, Korea. It was described as a new species, Shimiella gracilenta, belonging to the family Kareniaceae. This dinoflagellate was unique in its genetic differences from other genera in the family and its ability to survive using chloroplasts from its prey, indicating kleptoplastidy.

Plasticity and Multiplicity of Trophic Modes in the Dinoflagellate Karlodinium and Their Pertinence to Population Maintenance and Bloom Dynamics

Huijiao Yang et al.

Summary: With the increasing documentation of mixotrophic protists, mixoplankton has emerged as a new paradigm and research hotspot in aquatic plankton ecology. Among mixoplankton, dinoflagellates are a dominant group and Karlodinium species have been intensively studied for their phagotrophic trophic modes, which exhibit characteristics such as omnivority, flexibility in phagotrophic mechanisms, and cannibalism. However, further research is needed on the trophic modes of recently described and less studied species within the genus Karlodinium.
