On the Interplay between Freshwater Content and Hydrographic Conditions in the Arctic Ocean in the 1990s-2010s

Andrey Pnyushkov et al.

Summary: We investigated the freshwater content in the upper layer of the Arctic Ocean from 1990 to 2018 and found two opposite tendencies in freshwater balance. The Canada Basin experienced freshening while the eastern Eurasian Basin showed salinization. Over the studied period, the Arctic Ocean gained additional freshwater. The changes in freshwater content were concurrent with changes in the thermohaline properties of the intermediate Atlantic Water. The study also revealed a positive feedback mechanism linking freshwater content with vertical heat and salt exchange in the eastern Eurasian Basin.

Structure of the Freshened Surface Layer in the Kara Sea During Ice-Free Periods

A. A. Osadchiev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the seasonal and interannual variability of the freshened surface layer in the Kara Sea during ice-free periods, with low salinity and strong stratification influenced by freshwater discharge. The area of fresh plume gradually decreases with decreasing river discharge, remaining limited to certain parts of the FSL by August-October. The outer part of the FSL remains stable in area and position until the end of the ice-free period, with salinities increasing and vertical salinity gradients decreasing.

Summary: Satellite altimetry is an efficient tool for detecting dynamic processes in the global ocean, but using this technology alone is not accurate for detecting the Ob-Yenisei plume, requiring validation with in situ measurements.

Water Exchange Between the Gulf of Ob and the Kara Sea During Ice-Free Seasons: The Roles of River Discharge and Wind Forcing

Alexander Osadchiev et al.

Summary: The Gulf of Ob is heavily influenced by river discharge and wind forcing during ice-free seasons, with gravitational circulation dominating over tidal forcing. Remote wind forcing plays a significant role in enhancing estuarine-sea water exchange, affecting the influx of saline water and ultimately impacting the phytoplankton communities in the gulf.

The poleward enhanced Arctic Ocean cooling machine in a warming climate

Qi Shu et al.

Summary: The Barents Sea serves as a cooling machine for the Arctic Ocean, releasing ocean heat and playing a crucial role in regulating climate and determining ocean circulation. The study shows that as the climate warms, the efficiency of this cooling machine is enhanced poleward, driving Arctic Atlantification towards the poles.
