Marine cold-spells

Robert W. Schlegel et al.

Summary: Characterizing ocean temperature variability and extremes is crucial for understanding marine ecosystems. While marine heatwaves threaten ecosystems, marine cold-spells have received less attention. Ecological impacts include mass mortalities and range shifts. The development of marine cold-spells is often wind-induced, and globally they are decreasing in occurrence, duration, and intensity over the past 15 years.

Spatiotemporal Variability and Trends of Marine Heat Waves in the Red Sea over 38 Years

Bayoumy Mohamed et al.

Summary: Marine heat waves can have catastrophic consequences for the socio-environmental system, especially in the Red Sea. Analysis of sea surface temperature variability and trends in the Red Sea from 1982-2019 shows an average warming rate of 0.342 +/- 0.047 degrees C/decade, with increases in MHW frequency and duration over the past two decades. The strong correlation between MHW frequency and annual mean SST indicates a potential link between warming temperatures and more frequent marine heat waves in the Red Sea.

Marine heatwaves in the Humboldt current system: from 5-day localized warming to year-long El Ninos

Alice Pietri et al.

Summary: During the last four decades, marine heatwaves (MHWs) have been regularly disrupting the coastal ecosystem of the Peru-Chile eastern boundary upwelling system. Long duration MHWs have decreased in occurrence and intensity in the coastal domain north of 15 degrees S, while short events have shown an increase in their thermal impact and affected days south of 15 degrees S, particularly those lasting 30-100 days. Variability of long duration MHWs in the coastal domain is correlated with remote equatorial variability, and the onset of short events is associated with a relaxation of the local coastal wind.

Warming in Europe: Recent Trends in Annual and Seasonal temperatures

Robert Twardosz et al.

Summary: This study analyzes temperature changes in Europe from 1951 to 2020 based on data from 210 weather stations, finding a linear increase in temperatures since 1985. The greatest temperature rise is seen in spring, while summer displays the greatest stability. Overall, warming intensifies towards the northeast of the continent, with noticeable changes in winter and spring compared to summer.
