Nutritional perspectives for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19

Saeed Akhtar et al.

Summary: Clinical trials are underway globally to evaluate treatment options for COVID-19, with a focus on improving nutrition through micronutrient supplementation to prevent and alleviate the severity of the infection. Deficiencies in micronutrients, particularly vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, zinc, iron, and selenium, are common among vulnerable populations and COVID-19 patients, increasing the risk of mortality. Strategic use of micronutrient supplementation, along with existing fortification programs, is warranted during the current pandemic, especially in low- and middle-income economies.

Association of plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids with arterial blood pressure A Mendelian randomization study

Menghuai Ma et al.

Summary: The study found no causal association between polyunsaturated fatty acids and systolic blood pressure, with arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure, and linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid positively associated with diastolic blood pressure. There was no causal relationship between docosapentaenoic acid or docosahexaenoic acid with diastolic blood pressure.

Blood omega-3 fatty acids and death from COVID-19: A pilot study

Arash Asher et al.

Summary: Long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids may play a role in reducing morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 infection, with a pilot study showing an inverse association between Omega-3 Index levels and death risk. However, more well-powered studies are needed to confirm this potential relationship.

White Blood Cells and Severe COVID-19: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Yitang Sun et al.

Summary: The study reveals causal protective effects of higher basophil count, basophil percentage of white blood cells, and myeloid white blood cell count on severe COVID-19, but no association with COVID-19 severity or susceptibility was found. Individuals with a lower genetic capacity for basophils may be at risk, while enhancing basophil production could be an effective therapeutic strategy.

Summary: Malnutrition may impact susceptibility to and progression of COVID-19, with limited evidence on the effectiveness of high-dose micronutrient supplements in preventing severe disease or expediting recovery. Prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes shows strong evidence in reducing the risk of serious COVID-19 outcomes.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood are associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, particularly with long chain omega-3 fatty acids. This association may help reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other causes.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid are associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease, while higher levels of linoleic acid are also linked to lower CAD risk. Arachidonic acid, on the other hand, showed significant causal estimates for a higher risk of CAD.

Metabolic biomarker profiling for identification of susceptibility to severe pneumonia and COVID-19 in the general population

Heli Julkunen et al.

Summary: Metabolic biomarkers are associated with susceptibility to severe COVID-19 and pneumonia, with both short-term and long-term risks being equally significant. Elevated levels of metabolic biomarkers may indicate higher risk of developing severe pneumonia within the first few years after measurement. These findings suggest that metabolic biomarker profiling could be a valuable tool in identifying individuals at high risk for severe infections.

Alteration in the Lipid Profile and the Desaturases Activity in Patients With Severe Pneumonia by SARS-CoV-2

Israel Perez-Torres et al.

Summary: The lipid metabolism of host cells is hijacked by SARS-CoV-2, causing changes in fatty acid profiles and desaturase activity, leading to alterations in total fatty acids, phospholipids, and non-esterified fatty acids. These changes may facilitate virus replication while also triggering the host cell's defense mechanisms to repair damage caused by the virus to cell membranes.

Mapping the human genetic architecture of COVID-19

Mari E. K. Niemi et al.

Summary: The genetic make-up of an individual plays a role in susceptibility and response to viral infections. A global network of researchers identified 13 significant genetic loci associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 cases. Mendelian randomization analyses suggest a causal role for smoking and body-mass index in severe COVID-19. Collaboration among human genetics researchers has allowed for the discovery of novel host genetic factors linked to COVID-19.

Omega-3 Index and Clinical Outcomes of Severe COVID-19: Preliminary Results of a Cross-Sectional Study

Rodrigo Zapata B et al.

Summary: Research showed that COVID-19 patients had generally low Omega-3 Index, significantly lower compared to healthy controls, and there was a negative correlation between Omega-3 Index and mechanical ventilation as well as death in severe COVID-19 cases. This suggests that the risk of severe COVID-19 can be stratified by Omega-3 Index quartile. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the value of Omega-3 Index as a blood marker for COVID-19.
