Experimental study on the cell-jet temperatures of abused prismatic Ni-rich automotive batteries under medium and high states of charge

Hewu Wang et al.

Summary: The study, conducted on a commercial prismatic cell triggered to thermal runaway in an inert atmosphere, revealed a trend of increasing jet temperature with state of charge. This highlights the need for BTMS design to consider high thermal loads and shocks from thermal runaway even in the absence of external air for combustion.

A multi-factor evaluation method for the thermal runaway risk of lithium-ion batteries

Zhirong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper systematically established a multi-factor evaluation method for the thermal runaway risk of lithium-ion batteries using the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Multiple factors were quantitatively evaluated and analyzed to determine evaluation weights and risk grade ranges. A case study showed that under abuse conditions, the thermal runaway risk from LIBs is level III, emphasizing the importance of protecting against gas explosions and the harm of JFHM.

Critical review of life cycle assessment of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles: A lifespan perspective

Xin Lai et al.

Summary: This study reviews the framework and methods of life cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluates the entire lifespan of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The results show that battery production significantly impacts the environment and resources, while battery materials recycling and remanufacturing have considerable environmental and economic values. Moreover, greening of electricity is critical to reducing carbon emissions during the battery life cycle.

A comparative study on the reactivity of charged Ni-rich and Ni-poor positive electrodes with electrolyte at elevated temperatures using accelerating rate calorimetry

Dongxu Ouyang et al.

Summary: The reactivity between charged Li-rich and SC-NMC811 samples with electrolyte at elevated temperatures is greatly affected by the state of charge, while LFP and LMFP samples show excellent thermal stability. The substitution of Fe by Mn in the olivine series positive materials does not impact the reactivity with electrolyte.

Experimental study on thermal runaway of fully charged and overcharged lithium-ion batteries under adiabatic and side-heating test

Chunpeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing SOC of the battery leads to a longer time interval from voltage drop to the onset of thermal runaway. Additionally, the initial temperature of TR for LIBs at different SOCs is similar, but the temperature decreases as SOC increases. Therefore, it is recommended to consider multiple factors in determining the TR hazards of LIBs.
