Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient-DRL Enabled Multiphysics-Constrained Fast Charging of Lithium-Ion Battery

Zhongbao Wei et al.

Summary: This article proposes a knowledge-based and multiphysics-constrained fast charging strategy for lithium-ion batteries, which takes into account thermal safety and degradation. The proposed strategy combines a model-based state observer with a deep reinforcement learning-based optimizer to provide a solution for fast charging. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed strategy in terms of charging speed, thermal safety, and battery life extension.

Adaptive Ensemble-Based Electrochemical-Thermal Degradation State Estimation of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This article proposes a computationally efficient state estimation method for lithium-ion batteries based on a degradation-conscious high-fidelity electrochemical-thermal model. The algorithm uses an ensemble-based state estimator with the singular evolutive interpolated Kalman filter (SEIKF) to ease the computational burden caused by the nonlinear nature of the battery model. Unlike existing schemes, the proposed algorithm ensures mass conservation without additional constraints, simplifying the tuning process and improving convergence speed. The proposed scheme addresses model uncertainty and measurement errors through adaptive adjustment of the SEIKF's error covariance matrices. Comparisons with well-established nonlinear estimation techniques show that the adaptive ensemble-based Li-ion battery state estimator provides excellent performance in terms of accuracy, computational speed, and robustness.

Two-stage stochastic programming formulation for optimal design and operation of multi-microgrid system using data-based modeling of renewable energy sources

Dongho Han et al.

Summary: Microgrid (MG) is designed to accommodate distributed renewable energy sources and manage electricity generation using dispatch and storage systems to meet local demand. Multi-microgrid (MMG) systems can alleviate demand-supply mismatch issues through energy trading between individual MGs, but their design and operation become more complex. A two-stage stochastic decision-making approach is proposed in this study to design and operate an MMG while considering both capital and operating costs for electric cable installations. Stochastic models are developed using real weather data to describe the uncertain nature of energy production through renewable sources, and decisions are made in the first stage regarding the installation of electric cables between individual MGs to achieve the best tradeoff.
