State Estimation for Lithium-Ion Batteries With Phase Transition Materials Via Boundary Observers

Shumon Koga et al.

Summary: Lithium iron phosphate is a common active material in lithium-ion batteries, undergoing phase transitions during normal charge and discharge. A novel boundary observer using the backstepping method for PDEs is derived for estimating the concentration of lithium ions and moving boundary radius in phase transition materials. The gap between this observer and a complete SoC estimation algorithm for lithium-ion batteries with phase transition materials is discussed.

Investigation on the Voltage Hysteresis of Mn3O4 for Lithium-Ion Battery Applications

Yi-Ting Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, Mn3O4 powder was investigated as an anode material for LIBs to explore the root cause of voltage hysteresis, which was found to be composed of reaction overpotential and intrinsic overpotential related to diffusion behaviors. The formation of disparate phase distribution during lithiation and delithiation was identified as the possible origin of Mn3O4 intrinsic overpotential. The results provide insights into reducing energy loss and improving diffusion behaviors to eliminate voltage hysteresis of conversion-based electrodes in lithium-ion batteries.

A Low-Cost Multiwinding Transformer Balancing Topology for Retired Series-Connected Battery String

Lizhou Liu et al.

Summary: The traditional balance circuit used to balance retired battery strings requires extra space for switches, inductors, and capacitors. By combining the inductor of the dc-dc converter with the balance system using current ripple on the multiwinding transformer, additional switches and control logic are not needed. The proposed approach is effective in balancing battery strings and reduces costs by 60% and 66% compared to traditional methods.

Voltage hysteresis during lithiation/delithiation of graphite associated with meta-stable carbon stackings

Michael Peter Mercer et al.

Summary: The study reveals that graphite in Li-ion batteries exhibits hysteresis in OCV between charge and discharge processes, and that OCV is actually history dependent. A residual hysteresis is identified through first-principles calculations and temperature-controlled electrochemical measurements, showing differences in phase succession and Li disorder across planes. This residual hysteresis persists even at elevated temperatures and is associated with different host lattice stackings of carbon.
