Numerical phase change model considering crystal growth under supercooling

Haotian Huang et al.

Summary: This study used the implicit finite difference method to establish a two-dimensional PCM heat transfer model that considers the crystal growth process in detail. The results show that a large supercooling degree will accelerate the heat release rate of the PCM heat exchanger after the crystallization is triggered, while increasing the initial PCM temperature will reduce the sharp increase in the outlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid caused by crystallization.

Supercooling suppression and crystallization behaviour of erythritol/ expanded graphite as form-stable phase change material

Mengdi Yuan et al.

Summary: The study aims to mitigate the supercooling issue in erythritol/expanded graphite composite phase change materials, focusing on the correlation between morphology, kinetic parameters, and supercooling degree during non-isothermal crystallization. Various supercooling relaxation agents were tested to prepare the composite PCM, with nano-Al2O3 showing the best results. In addition, pressure and cooling rate were found to impact the supercooling degree and crystallization behavior of the composite PCM.

Flexible phase change materials with enhanced tensile strength, thermal conductivity and photo-thermal performance

Zhuodi Cai et al.

Summary: Phase change materials have great potential for storing solar thermal energy, but their poor optical absorptive capacity, low thermal conductivity, and poor tensile strength are limiting factors. By using expanded graphite to encapsulate paraffin and mixing with thermoplastic elastomer, a highly flexible phase change composite with improved thermal conductivity and strength can be produced.

Heterogeneous nucleation on surfaces of the three-dimensional cylindrical substrate

Lina Hu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the influence of substrate geometry and wettability on the heterogeneous nucleation barrier using classical nucleation theory and a thermodynamic model. It found that the curvature of the substrate surface affects the nucleation energy barrier, with smaller radius of curvature leading to higher barrier on convex substrates and larger curvature radius leading to higher barrier on concave substrates. The results provide a fundamental physical model for selecting carbon nanotubes as heterogeneous nucleating agents and designing microstructure surfaces for enhanced heat transfer.

Verification of the Stokes-Einstein relation in liquid noble metals over a wide range of temperatures

Most Nayema Khatun et al.

Summary: The validity of Stokes-Einstein relations in liquid noble metals Cu, Ag, and Au over a wide temperature range has been studied using Dzugutov's scaling scheme and Faber's hard-sphere theory. The temperature-dependent effective hard-sphere diameter and excess entropy were determined, with results closer to experimental data when using alpha(T) and b(T). Calculated transport coefficients were in good agreement with experimental data when the scaling scheme with alpha(T) and b(T) was considered.

Summary: The use of probe molecules is a crucial technique in extracting local dynamical and structural properties of complex dynamical systems. This study shows how the translational dynamics of a rod-like particle in a supercooled liquid can provide information on the growth of correlation length scales and multi-body static correlations. Additionally, it presents a unified scaling theory that rationalizes the observed results in supercooled liquids and proposes a novel experimental method to measure important length scales in molecular glass-forming liquids.
