Salty Twins: Salt-Tolerance of Terrestrial Cyanocohniella Strains (Cyanobacteria) and Description of C. rudolphia sp. nov. Point towards a Marine Origin of the Genus and Terrestrial Long Distance Dispersal Patterns

Patrick Jung et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine a potential niche concept for the genus Cyanocohniella based on salt tolerance. Results showed that C. rudolphia sp. nov. and C. crotaloides strains exhibited optimum growth at 4% NaCl concentration, supporting the hypothesis that the genus may have a marine origin and expanded colonization to salty terrestrial habitats. The ecological and biotechnological relevance of the findings were discussed.

Bioactive Metabolites Produced by Cyanobacteria for Growth Adaptation and Their Pharmacological Properties

Pavitra Nandagopal et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are oxygenic microorganisms that release oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. They synthesize bioactive metabolites for protection against harmful environmental conditions and colonization in diverse habitats. These bioactive compounds not only play a role in cyanobacterial survival but also have potential for treating various diseases.
