Critically important antimicrobial resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Irish farm effluent and their removal in integrated constructed wetlands

Deirdre M. Prendergast et al.

Summary: This study found that Integrated Constructed Wetlands (ICWs) are effective in removing critically important antimicrobial resistant organisms (AROs) from farm wastewater, with significant differences in the number of AROs isolated between influent and effluent and a seasonal effect on ARO recovery. There were no significant differences in ARO recovery among different farm types, but multi drug resistance was common among isolates from all farms, with high levels of resistance to certain antibiotics varying between farms.

Plasmid-Borne and Chromosomal ESBL/AmpC Genes in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in Global Food Products

Paula Kurittu et al.

Summary: The study investigated food products from 35 countries on six continents, sampled in the capital region of Finland. Out of 200 samples, 14 were positive for ESBL/AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae, with 18% from meat and 5% from vegetables. The study identified a variety of multidrug-resistant genes and plasmid types, indicating the potential risk of zoonotic transmission and the need for further surveillance.

Antimicrobial Resistance Glides in the Sky-Free-Living Birds as a Reservoir of Resistant Escherichia coli With Zoonotic Potential

Magdalena Skarzynska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli from free-living birds, highlighting various resistant determinants towards critical antimicrobial classes. Whole-genome sequencing revealed numerous sequence types and virulence factors, emphasizing the potential hazards of clonal spread of E. coli lineages associated with avian health.

Occurrence and Molecular Characteristics of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales Recovered From Chicken, Chicken Meat, and Human Infections in Sao Paulo State, Brazil

Marita Vedovelli Cardozo et al.

Summary: This study in Sao Paolo, Brazil, investigated the phylogenetic diversity and epidemiology of ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae from chicken, chicken meat, and human clinical isolates. The ESBL genes were characterized and their location determined on plasmids. The study found genetic diversity in isolates from chickens, chicken meat, and human feces, suggesting possible transmission of ESBL-producing pathogens from chickens to humans.
