Spotlight on alternative frame coding: Two long overlapping genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa are translated and under purifying selection

Michaela Kreitmeier et al.

Summary: The discovery of overlapping genes with significant coding overlaps has revolutionized our understanding of genomic complexity. In this study, two unusually long antisense open reading frames were found in a pathogenic bacterium, and their transcription and translation were confirmed. Proteomics analysis revealed regulation of protein abundances, suggesting biological functionality. These findings highlight a potentially unexplored dimension of prokaryotic genomes.

Coupled Transcription-Translation in Prokaryotes: An Old Couple With New Surprises

Mikel Irastortza-Olaziregi et al.

Summary: Coupled transcription-translation (CTT) is a hallmark of prokaryotic gene expression, involved in important gene regulation processes. Despite progress in understanding the cellular signals coordinating CTT, certain aspects of its molecular architecture remain controversial. Studies questioning the occurrence of CTT suggest that transcription and translation can be artificially uncoupled under certain conditions.
