Cell size as driver and sentinel of phytoplankton community structure and functioning

Helmut Hillebrand et al.

Summary: From a systematic literature review, it was found that there are consistent and significant allometric relationships between cell sizes and the functional performance of phytoplankton species. Additionally, there is a rich literature on how cell sizes change in response to various environmental factors, which helps in understanding the impact of cell size on phytoplankton community dynamics. In conclusion, cell size is a highly predictive trait for phytoplankton metabolism at the cellular scale and serves as a suitable sentinel of phytoplankton responses to changing environments.

Impacts of nutrient loading and fish grazing on the phytoplankton community and cyanotoxin production in a shallow tropical lake: Results from mesocosm experiments

Mathias K. Ahoutou et al.

Summary: Given the increasing eutrophication of water bodies in Africa, this study aimed to understand the short-term response of phytoplankton communities to nutrient addition and the presence of fish. The results showed that the addition of nitrogen and phosphorus stimulated phytoplankton growth, but fish presence led to a decrease in biomass. These findings provide valuable insights for strategies to control cyanobacterial blooms.

Temperature and the size of freshwater phytoplankton

Tamar Zohary et al.

Summary: The literature review found that freshwater phytoplankton become smaller with increasing water temperature, in line with Bergmann's Rule. Experimental and field evidence support this hypothesis, with exceptions mostly explained by indirect effects of temperature on phytoplankton size.

Ecological impacts of freshwater algal blooms on water quality, plankton biodiversity, structure, and ecosystem functioning

Cihelio Alves Amorim et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms, particularly those dominated by Cyanobacteria, have significant negative impacts on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, affecting water quality, plankton structure, and resource use efficiency of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The loss of biodiversity due to algal blooms results in decreased ecosystem functioning, with cascading effects on plankton dynamics.

Comparative analysis of freshwater phytoplankton communities in two lakes of Burabay National Park using morphological and molecular approaches

Dmitry Malashenkov et al.

Summary: In this study, phytoplankton assemblages in two lakes were analyzed using traditional morphological and next-generation sequencing methods. The findings suggest limitations of NGS in identifying phytoplankton taxa, but combining it with microscopy allows for a complete taxonomic characterization. The integrated morphological and molecular approach shows promise in understanding aquatic ecosystem organization processes.
