UHPLC-MS/MS-GNPS based phytochemical investigation of Equisetum arvense L. And evaluation of cytotoxicity against human melanoma and ovarian cancer cells

Zia-ur-Rehman et al.

Summary: This study conducted phytochemical analysis of Equisetum arvense and identified 22 compounds, including flavonoids, flavonoid-O-glycosides, and phenolic acids. The cytotoxic potential of E. arvense against melanoma and ovarian cancer cells was evaluated, and it showed significant anti-cancer activity. These findings suggest that E. arvense could be utilized in the development of anti-cancer drugs.

Pressurized liquid extraction of brewer's spent grain: Kinetics and crude extracts characterization

Giulia Herbst et al.

Summary: This study investigated the extraction yield of valuable compounds from brewer's spent grain using pressurized liquid extraction, with a focus on temperature, solvent type, and flow rate. It was found that water and water/ethanol extractions, as well as higher temperatures, favored the extraction of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoid compounds, and antioxidant activity. High extraction yields were achieved with PLE, maintaining reducing sugars and total reducing sugars in the BSG matrix.

Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Spent Coffee Grounds. Process Optimization Applying Design of Experiments

Jose P. Coelho et al.

Summary: In this study, MAE technology with green solvents was used to extract phenolic compounds from SCGs, optimized through DOE and CCD methods. The significant factors and optimized values were identified, leading to successful optimization of yield, TPC, and AA. Analysis of compound compositions confirmed the determinative significance of ethanol percentage in the solvent mixture.

Multilayer Approach for Product Portfolio Optimization: Waste to Added-Value Products

Lidia S. Guerras et al.

Summary: A multistage multilayer systematic procedure has been developed for the selection of the optimal product portfolio from waste biomass as feedstock for systems involving water-energy-food nexus. The methodology involves a hybrid approach of heuristic evaluation, metric-based preselection, and superstructure optimization. The study applies this approach to evaluate the best use of biomass residue from the olive oil industry towards food, chemicals, and energy.
