Unexpected Role of pH and Microenvironment on the Antioxidant and Synergistic Activity of Resveratrol in Model Micellar and Liposomal Systems

Adrian Konopko et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that resveratrol is a potent scavenger of radicals in homogeneous systems. The effectiveness of resveratrol as an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation depends on pH, with the best effectiveness at pH 6. Resveratrol forms dimers with recovered ability to trap lipid peroxyl radicals, facilitated by its increased concentration at the lipid-water interface.

Gallic Acid Improves Diabetic Steatosis by Downregulating MicroRNA-34a-5p through Targeting NFE2L2 Expression in High-Fat Diet-Fed db/db Mice

Ang-Tse Lee et al.

Summary: This study found that gallic acid (GA) can improve hepatic lipid metabolism and diabetic fatty liver by downregulating the expression of miR-34a-5p. GA improves the condition of high-fat diet-induced steatotic mice by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and inhibiting lipid accumulation. In addition, silencing miR-34a-5p can also reduce lipid accumulation in hepatocytes.

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Nanodevices Based on Fe3O4 Coated by Megluminic Ligands for the Adsorption of Metal Anions from Water

Stefano Scurti et al.

Summary: The uptake ability of ad hoc functionalized magnetic nanostructured devices towards arsenic, chromium, and boron ions has been investigated. The results show that the use of meglumine-based ligands to coat magnetite nanoparticles leads to a higher adsorption capacity for these metal ions compared to other magnetic nanostructured materials. The nanomaterial can be efficiently removed from water using an external magnetic stimulus, and it can be reused up to five cycles.

Methods to Determine Chain-Breaking Antioxidant Activity of Nanomaterials beyond DPPH•. A Review

Andrea Baschieri et al.

Summary: This review highlights the recent progress in understanding the mechanism of action of nanomaterials with antioxidant activity and in evaluating their activity using chemical methods. Nanomaterials play a significant role in improving antioxidant research, but there is a need for better characterization of the property of "antioxidant activity" and avoiding oversimplified chemical methods.

Caffeic Acid Phenyl Ester (CAPE) Protects against Iron-Mediated Cellular DNA Damage through Its Strong Iron-Binding Ability and High Lipophilicity

Bo Shao et al.

Summary: The study found that CAPE is more effective in preventing cellular DNA damage induced by iron overload compared to other compounds, possibly due to its stronger iron-binding ability and lipophilicity. Understanding the iron coordination mechanism of such natural polyphenol antioxidants may help in designing more effective antioxidants.

A Novel Stoichio-Kinetic Model for the DPPH• Assay: The Importance of the Side Reaction and Application to Complex Mixtures

Lucrezia Angeli et al.

Summary: A novel stoichio-kinetic model was applied in this study to monitor the consumption of DPPH center dot by common antioxidants, yielding rate constants k(1) and k(2) to describe the main and side reactions. This approach was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of various compounds and herbal extracts, providing insights into the kinetics of the reactions. The study suggests a new kinetic approach to standardize the common DPPH center dot assay for the determination of antioxidant activity.

The Fine-Tuned Release of Antioxidant from Superparamagnetic Nanocarriers under the Combination of Stationary and Alternating Magnetic Fields

Lucija Mandic et al.

Summary: Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles were prepared using solvothermal method and stabilized with biocompatible polymer PEG-4000 Da. These nanoparticles can deliver and localize the water-insoluble quercetin to desired site by employing combined stationary and alternating magnetic fields, as proven by various analytical techniques. The study demonstrated increased response of quercetin release from superparamagnetic MNPs under specific magnetic field conditions.

Autoxidation vs. antioxidants - the fight for forever

Julian Helberg et al.

Summary: Autoxidation limits the longevity of hydrocarbons and materials by leading to complex mixtures of compounds that alter their physical properties. Antioxidants can inhibit this process by intervening directly in the chain reaction. Understanding the mechanistic considerations of autoxidation is important across various contexts.
