A novel electrolytic process using a Cu cathode for the production of Mg metal from MgO

Hyeong-Jun Jeoung et al.

Summary: An environmentally friendly and effective molten salt electrolysis process using a copper (Cu) cathode was developed for producing magnesium (Mg) metal from magnesium oxide (MgO). The influence of various factors on the current efficiency was investigated, and the microstructure of the Al2O3 crucible containing Mg alloy was analyzed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of this novel electrolytic process for producing Mg metal.

Development of a novel electrolytic process for producing high-purity magnesium metal from magnesium oxide using a liquid tin cathode

Tae-Hyuk Lee et al.

Summary: A novel magnesium production process utilizing electrolysis of magnesium oxide with liquid tin cathode and carbon anode in a molten salt was developed, resulting in high-purity magnesium metal obtained at 99.999% purity through vacuum distillation from a magnesium-tin alloy. The method shows promise as an efficient way to produce high-purity magnesium metal from magnesium oxide.

A novel utilization of ferronickel slag as a source of magnesium metal and ferroalloy production

Zulfiadi Zulhan et al.

Summary: Processing of laterite nickel ore produces ferronickel slag, with main constituents including silicon oxide, magnesium oxide, and iron oxide. The amount of ferronickel slag has increased due to rising demand for ferronickel and stainless steel. Experimental results show that at temperatures of 1500-1550 degrees Celsius under argon or vacuum environments, magnesium evaporates and forms ferro-silicon-chromium.

Scale-Up Study of Molten Salt Electrolysis using Cu or Ag Cathode and Vacuum Distillation for the Production of High-Purity Mg Metal from MgO

Dong-Hee Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the scale-up of a novel electrolytic process and vacuum distillation to produce high-purity Mg metal directly from MgO. The influence of different cathode metals and Mg alloy concentrations on current efficiency, as well as the interaction of Al2O3 with the electrolyte and cathode, were studied. High current efficiencies were achieved in producing Mg alloys such as Mg2Cu and MgAg, with subsequent vacuum distillation resulting in obtaining 99.9997% Mg metal.
