Distinctive Features of Kawasaki Disease Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection: a Controlled Study in Paris, France

Julie Toubiana et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, including Kawasaki disease. Research showed that children with KD associated with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were more likely to be of sub-Saharan African ancestry, older, exhibit more gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, shock syndrome, and myocarditis compared to those with classic KD. These findings highlight the need for further investigation into the pathogenesis of KD-SARS-CoV-2.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children: An International Survey

Carles Bautista-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: An international survey on children diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 showed a wide clinical spectrum, including Kawasaki disease-like cases, life-threatening shock, and milder cases with mainly fever and inflammation. A shorter duration of symptoms before admission was associated with a worse outcome.

Myocarditis after Covid-19 Vaccination in a Large Health Care Organization

Guy Witberg et al.

Summary: Among 2.5 million patients who received the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a large Israeli health care system, the incidence of myocarditis at 42 days was 2.13 cases per 100,000 persons, with the highest incidence (10.69 per 100,000 persons) among male patients between the ages of 16 and 29 years. Most cases of myocarditis were mild or moderate.

BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine in a Nationwide Mass Vaccination Setting

Noa Dagan et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Israel on nearly 600,000 individuals showed that the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was effective in reducing the risk of infection, hospitalization, and severe Covid-19. The effectiveness in preventing death was 72% during the period from day 14 through day 20 after the first dose, and hospitalization was reduced by 87% for the period 7 or more days after the second dose, similar to results from a randomized trial.

Defining Kawasaki disease and pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome-temporally associated to SARS-CoV-2 infection during SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Italy: results from a national, multicenter survey

Marco Cattalini et al.

Summary: The study indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to two distinct inflammatory diseases in children: Kawasaki Disease and PIMS-TS. Older age and clinical peculiarities like myocarditis characterize this multi-inflammatory syndrome, with patients showing optimal response to treatments, few complications, and no deaths.

Myocarditis With COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines

Biykem Bozkurt et al.

Summary: Myocarditis is a rare complication of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, predominantly affecting young adult and adolescent males, with most patients showing improvement in symptoms. Possible mechanisms include molecular mimicry between viral proteins and self-antigens, dysregulated immune pathways, immune response to mRNA, and dysregulated cytokine expression.

Association of Myocarditis With BNT162b2 Messenger RNA COVID-19 Vaccine in a Case Series of Children

Audrey Dionne et al.

Summary: This study reviewed comprehensive cardiac imaging results in children with myocarditis after receiving the BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine. Most cases of myocarditis occurred in boys after the second dose, and patients showed mild symptoms in short-term follow-up. Long-term risks of post-vaccination myocarditis remain unknown, necessitating larger studies for vaccination recommendations in this population.

Summary: Myocarditis as a potential complication of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines is increasing. It predominantly affects young males within a few days after the second dose. Most patients were admitted to the hospital within three days post-vaccination with symptoms of chest pain and elevated troponin, and all patients recovered and were discharged.
