Current benchtop protocols are not appropriate for the evaluation of distraction-based growing rods: a literature review to justify a new protocol and its development

Niloufar Shekouhi et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate distraction-based growing rods for the treatment of early onset scoliosis. The authors conducted literature searches, developed finite element models, and performed mechanical testing to identify key features and factors that contribute to the failure of growing rods. The results showed that long tandem connectors had higher stiffness and yield load compared to side-by-side connectors. The finite element predictions were consistent with the experimental outcomes and observed failures in vivo. This two-way approach provides a robust prediction of the factors contributing to in vivo failure.

Biomechanics of immature human cortical bone: A systematic review

Emily Szabo et al.

Summary: The knowledge on the whole bone geometry, microstructure, and mechanical properties of immature pediatric long bones increases with maturation, but the specific year-to-year progression of these properties remains unclear. There is still a lack of understanding in the biomechanics of immature bone, calling for further research to develop a solid research foundation.

Effects of Growing Rod Technique with Different Surgical Modes and Growth Phases on the Treatment Outcome of Early Onset Scoliosis: A 3-D Finite Element Analysis

Baoqing Pei et al.

Summary: Early onset scoliosis is a serious threat to children's health, and the growing rod technique is a commonly used treatment. However, there are still risks of postoperative complications and instrumentation breakage. This study investigates the effects of different fixation methods on the spine and provides suggestions for the selection of fixed segments in different growth phases.

Distraction forces on the spine in early-onset scoliosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical and biomechanical literature

Justin V. C. Lemans et al.

Summary: This study identified safety limits for pediatric spine distraction through a systematic review and meta-analysis, with in-vivo studies showing average distraction forces ranging from 242 to 621 N when using pedicle screw constructs. Ex-vivo studies demonstrated that segment C0-C2 was the strongest, with strength decreasing in more distal segments.
