Can changes in midsole bending stiffness of shoes affect the onset of joint work redistribution during a prolonged run?

Sasa Cigoja et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of changing the midsole bending stiffness of athletic footwear on the redistribution of joint work during a prolonged run. The results showed that running in stiff shoes delayed the onset of joint work redistribution and potentially resulted in less activated muscle volume. These findings contribute to the understanding of how increased shoe stiffness can reduce metabolic cost by delaying the redistribution of joint work.

Summary: This study suggests that standard footwear midsole materials have little effect on leg stiffness during running, but do restrict arch compression.

Three-Dimensional Innate Mobility of the Human Foot on Coronally-Wedged Surfaces Using a Biplane X-Ray Fluoroscopy

Takuo Negishi et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into how the foot and ankle joints adapt to coronally wedged surfaces. The results indicate that the foot is more deformed on medially wedged surfaces, possibly as an adaptation to uneven terrains. The mobility of the talocalcaneal joint plays a role in the rotation of the talus and tibia.

Effect of Long-Distance Running on Inter-segment Foot Kinematics and Ground Reaction Forces: A Preliminary Study

Jialin Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the kinematic and ground reaction force alterations induced within the foot following a 5 and 10 km run. The findings showed that 5 km of running would induce excessive foot motion while 10 km of running may gradually change the foot posture and lead to reduced propulsive forces. This could potentially increase the risks of running-related injuries.

The extensibility of the plantar fascia influences the windlass mechanism during human running

Lauren Welte et al.

Summary: The human foot arch is both compliant and stiff during ground contact and push-off, thanks to the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia's role in shaping the arch and storing/releasing elastic energy is crucial, despite its stretching and shortening during gait.

Summary: The study found that skin-marker models using the navicular tuberosity as the apex of the MLA angle provide a more accurate estimation of MLA deformation compared to radiographic measures, with the least errors and highest correlations.

No Association of Plantar Aponeurosis Stiffness with Medial Longitudinal Arch Stiffness

Hiroaki Noro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plantar aponeurosis stiffness and medial longitudinal arch stiffness. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between shear wave velocity of the plantar aponeurosis and medial longitudinal arch stiffness, suggesting that the latter is more influenced by other foot structures.

A systematic review of running-related musculoskeletal injuries in runners

Nicolas Kakouris et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the literature to determine the incidence and prevalence of running-related musculoskeletal injuries. It found that there was no significant difference in injury incidence between ultramarathon runners and non-ultramarathon runners, and identified specific pathologies with high incidence proportions. The interpretation of epidemiological data in this area is limited by methodological issues.

Effect of the Construction of Carbon Fiber Plate Insert to Midsole on Running Performance

Fengqin Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the independent effect of forefoot carbon-fiber plate construction on running biomechanics and finite element simulation in marathon runners. Results showed that changing from a full to segmented carbon fiber plate induced biomechanical changes but did not significantly affect running performance. Manufacturers can benefit by reducing peak pressure on the midsole through altering the carbon plate structure.
