A comparison of dislocation cellular patterns generated in Inconel 718 alloy and pure Ni fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Minglin He et al.

Summary: The dislocation cellular pattern (DCP) has a significant impact on the mechanical properties of metals fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Through the investigation of Inconel 718 alloy and pure Ni, it is found that the generation mechanisms and morphologies of DCP are influenced by thermal stress and solute atoms.

New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Orientation dependence of dislocation structure in surface grain of pure copper deformed in tension

Qingqing Sun et al.

Summary: The orientation dependence of dislocation structure in surface grain of pure copper deformed in tension was found in this study to be strongly related to grain geometry. The evolution of dislocation structure in surface grains is delayed due to the image force at the surface.

Cyclic response of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel: The role of cell structures

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The presence of cell structures in additively manufactured stainless steel significantly influences its fatigue behavior, with fully cellular samples exhibiting higher strength, lower cyclic softening rate, and longer lifetime compared to cell-free samples. The activation of planar slip due to cell structures delays strain localization and ultimately enhances fatigue performance.

Improving the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of a selective laser melted high-entropy alloy via modifying the cellular structures

Zhenghong Fu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that modifying cellular structures through controlled annealing can effectively improve the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of selective laser melting processed alloys. Annealing preserved cellular structures while reducing dislocation densities, slightly reducing strength but significantly increasing ductility and HE resistance. The delayed crack initiation and propagation were attributed to hydrogen-enhanced local plasticity with formation of nano-twins and dislocation cells in the modified structures.
