Prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in pre-diabetes: a systematic review

Varo Kirthi et al.

Summary: A systematic review on the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in pre-diabetes revealed a higher prevalence in this population, primarily of small nerve fiber origin. The use of different assessment methods resulted in heterogeneity in prevalence estimates. Further consideration is needed for targeting screening and developing risk-stratification tools.

Neuropathic pain and symptoms of potential small-fiber neuropathy in fibromyalgic patients: A national on-line survey

Antonello Viceconti et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that approximately 50% of fibromyalgic patients have neuropathy of small- and/or large-fibers, which may explain the puzzling symptoms of fibromyalgia. Despite the high prevalence of symptoms suggestive of small-fiber pathology, a relatively low percentage of patients underwent neurophysiologic investigations and skin punch biopsy.

But it feels swollen!: the frequency and clinical characteristics of people with knee osteoarthritis who report subjective knee swelling in the absence of objective swelling

So Tanaka et al.

Summary: The study found that about one-third of knee osteoarthritis patients perceive knee swelling subjectively without any objective evidence of swelling, and this is accompanied by severe pain and functional disability. Patients who only had subjective knee swelling had similar pain and disability levels as those with both subjective and objective swelling, but more severe than those without swelling. Those with subjective knee swelling also showed impaired tactile acuity and more dysfunctional pain catastrophizing and self-efficacy beliefs compared to the other groups.

Stratification of patients based on the Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory: development and validation of a new algorithm

Didier Bouhassira et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the effectiveness of an algorithm that stratifies patients into three clusters based on specific combinations of neuropathic symptoms for predicting treatment response. The algorithm accurately predicted treatment response to subcutaneous injections of botulinum toxin A in different patient clusters, demonstrating its relevance in clinical practice.
