Green Synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: A Review of Their Characterization and Industrial and Medical Applications

Mahboobeh Shahsavari et al.

Summary: Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are supramolecular solid materials with inorganic and organic linkers. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a sub-group of MOFs that have thermal stability and pore-size tunability. This study focuses on the green synthesis of ZIFs using environmentally friendly methods and discusses their applications.

Particle size effect on the catalytic properties of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

M. N. Timofeeva et al.

Summary: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are promising materials for catalyst synthesis due to their unique properties. This article reviews domestic and foreign studies on the catalytic properties of ZIFs in acid-base reactions published in the last 15 years. The focus is on the effect of ZIFs crystal size on their catalytic properties in condensation, cyclization, and esterification reactions, as well as the advantages, drawbacks, and practical issues of using ZIFs as catalysts.

Metal Embedded Porous Carbon for Efficient CO2 Cycloaddition under Mild Conditions

Chen Qi et al.

Summary: This article discusses the preparation of nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials through thermal pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazole frameworks, and their application as catalysts for CO2 fixation. The research found that zinc dispersion in the synthesized materials exhibited superior catalytic performance, while the acid sites and incorporated basic sites in the porous carbon material were essential for gas adsorption and CO2 conversion.

CO2 cycloaddition over ionic liquid immobilized hybrid zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: Effect of Lewis acid/base sites

Wenlong Xiang et al.

Summary: The study successfully prepared immobilized IL-ZIF-8 catalysts through post-synthetic modification, with the coexistence of Lewis acid and base sites significantly improving catalytic activity and achieving high yield and stability. The Lewis acid/base synergistic interaction reduced the energy barrier of propylene oxide ring-opening, promoting the CO2 cycloaddition reaction.

Metal Exchange of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 Nanoparticles with Fe(II) for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Lehlohonolo E. Mphuthi et al.

Summary: Incorporating iron into ZIFs through metal ion exchange significantly enhances their photocatalytic performance, resulting in a markedly higher catalytic activity for dye degradation. The Fe-exchanged ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 nanoparticles showed a dramatic improvement in photocatalysis compared to their parent ZIFs, with preserved morphology and crystal structures.

Synthesis of Erythrulose from Dihydroxyacetone and Formaldehyde Using Zinc Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

I. A. Lukoyanov et al.

Summary: The study shows that the selectivity of the aldol condensation of formaldehyde with dihydroxyacetone depends on the pH of the reaction solution, which is controlled by the temperature of the reaction and the amount of catalyst. High yields of C-6 sugars are obtained at pH 8.36 and 80 degrees C, while high yields of erythrulose are obtained at 65 degrees C. The yield of erythrulose using the studied catalytic systems increases in the order of MAF-6 > MAF-5 > ZIF-8, showing advantages over other phosphate systems proposed in the literature.

Fine-Tuning Window Apertures in ZIF-8/67 Frameworks by Metal Ions and Temperature for High-Efficiency Molecular Sieving of Xylenes

Daniil M. Polyukhov et al.

Summary: MOFs are promising for separating structurally similar components, with fine-tuning of the structure leading to higher efficiency. This study demonstrates that subtle metal- and temperature-induced changes in window dimensions of MOFs can efficiently separate xylene isomers, showing potential for target liquid-state separations.

A catalytic approach of blending CO2-activating MOF struts for cycloaddition reaction in a helically interlaced Cu(II) amino acid imidazolate framework: DFT-corroborated investigation

Amal Cherian Kathalikkattil et al.

Summary: In the field of CO2 transformation catalysis, attention has been focused on the synthesis of cyclic carbonates using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) and MOFs with carboxylate-capped SBUs as catalysts. A unified multifunctional framework formed by metal-centered assembly of imidazole and amino-carboxylates showed promise for CO2 transformation. The synthesized heterogeneous catalyst demonstrated high activity with minimal energy input, and was successfully reused multiple times with no significant decrease in performance.

Effect of MAF-6 Crystal Size on Its Physicochemical and Catalytic Properties in the Cycloaddition of CO2 to Propylene Oxide

Maria N. Timofeeva et al.

Summary: Based on Zn2+ and 2-ethylimidazole, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks MAF-5 and MAF-6 were demonstrated as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the solvent-free synthesis of propylene carbonate from CO2 and propylene oxide. The crystal size of MAF-6 was found to affect the yield of PC, with smaller particle size leading to higher efficiency. Combining MAF-6 with a specific particle size and [n-Bu4N]Br as co-catalyst resulted in a significant enhancement in the PC yield. Compared to reported ZIFs catalysts, the binary systems of MAF-5/[n-Bu4N]Br and MAF-6/[n-Bu4N]Br showed comparable or higher efficiencies under similar reaction conditions.
