Are Well Performing Catalysts for the Ring Opening Polymerization of L-Lactide under Mild Laboratory Conditions Suitable for the Industrial Process? The Case of New Highly Active Zn(II) Catalysts

Massimo Christian D'Alterio et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a sustainable plastic material for a circular economy, but few alternative catalysts can compete with the current catalyst for industrial production. A family of new Zn(II) complexes with various substituted ligands has been developed as catalysts for PLA polymerization under different conditions. The best performing catalyst under mild conditions is the worst performing under harsh conditions, and vice versa. Preliminary tests also suggest the potential of these catalysts for chemical recycling of PLA.

A Single Catalyst for Promoting Reverse Processes: Synthesis and Chemical Degradation of Polylactide

Federica Santulli et al.

Summary: A simple zinc catalyst has been found to exhibit high activity in both the synthesis and degradation of polylactide, showing one of the highest activities in ring-opening polymerization of lactides even under industrial conditions. The same complex also proved to be efficient in depolymerization of polylactide by alcoholysis at room temperature and without solvent, reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Chemical Recycling of Polyesters for a Circular Plastics Economy: Challenges and Emerging Opportunities

Jack Payne et al.

Summary: Plastics have been crucial in human development, but increasing environmental concerns have raised public scrutiny and calls for bans. This has led to the development of renewable alternatives and new waste management strategies, with a focus on catalytic chemical recycling of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The emergence of new materials has the potential to modernize the plastics economy, but industrial feasibility and challenges remain.

The Green toxicology approach: Insight towards the eco-toxicologically safe development of benign catalysts

Carina Lackmann et al.

Summary: Green toxicology is a novel approach increasingly used for developing materials and chemicals that are less harmful to the environment and human health. This study investigated the toxicity of guanidine zinc catalysts for ring-opening polymerization using eco-toxicological tools, finding potential effects on a molecular level without showing endocrine activity or mutagenicity. This research is a first step towards incorporating toxicological assessments into chemical development processes for sustainable and safe production of catalysts.

Zn(II)- and Mg(II)-Complexes of a Tridentate {ONN} Ligand: Application to Poly(lactic acid) Production and Chemical Upcycling of Polyesters

Jack M. Payne et al.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of two homoleptic Zn(II)- and Mg(II)-complexes based on a simple tridentate {NNO} ligand are reported. These complexes exhibited high activity for the production of biocompatible atactic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) under industrially relevant melt conditions. Additionally, they facilitated rapid PLA methanolysis into methyl lactate (Me-LA) under mild conditions, achieving high yields within short reaction times. Further analysis found them to have among the highest reported k(app) values, showing promise for diverse applications in upcycling strategies.
