Grain Refinement and Mechanical Property Improvements in Ultrasound-Assisted Brazing of SiCp/Al Composite Materials

Qinghe Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of additional ultrasonic treatment (AUT) on grain refinement and distribution of SiC particles during the solidification process of brazed joints. The experimental results showed that AUT could effectively refine grain, promote element diffusion, and improve the macroscopic uniformity of SiC particles. The effect of AUT varied at different temperatures.

Finite element analysis and experimental investigation of ultrasonic testing of internal defects in SiCp/Al composites

Shijin Lu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of ultrasonic testing for internal flat-bottom holes in SiCp/Al composites by combining finite element simulations and experiments. The propagation behavior of sound waves in specimens with pre-existing defects and the detectable size limit of internal defects were revealed through simulations and experiments, providing theoretical and practical guidance for ultrasonic testing of internal defects in SiCp/Al composites.

Hot Deformation Characteristics and Microstructure Evolution of SiCp/Al2014 Composite Fabricated by Powder Metallurgy

Cuige Dong et al.

Summary: The stress-strain behavior of hot-extruded SiCp/Al2014 composites during hot deformation was studied through isothermal compression tests, resulting in the construction of a processing map at a true strain of 0.6. It was found that flow stress increased with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate, indicating different hot deformation mechanisms at play. Instability of the composites was more likely to occur at high strain rates and low temperatures, leading to the definition of two optimal deformation processing windows on the processing map.

The effect of Ni and Zr additions on hardness, elastic modulus and wear performance of Al-SiCp composite

Lucia Lattanzi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wear behavior of aluminum-silicon alloys and found that the addition of silicon carbide particles can increase the elastic modulus of the material. The wear rate of all materials was within a low range, and the coefficient of friction decreased during the wear process.

Damage tolerance evaluation of a C/C-SiC composite body flap of a re-entry vehicle

F. Di Caprio et al.

Summary: This paper discusses delamination propagation in Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) for spacecraft applications. CMC materials are being increasingly used in aerospace for their heat resistance and structural stiffness, but delamination issues pose a potential limitation. The study performed numerical calibration of CMC material models and analyzed delamination sensitivity, highlighting the complexities in assessing damage tolerance in these materials.

Zhanwei Yuan et al.

Summary: The study on deformation behavior and damage mechanism of 17% SiCp/Al composites under biaxial loading shows that the material has less severe damage in the rolling normal direction compared to the two tensile directions, while still experiencing interface debonding, particle shedding, and microcrack propagation in all three directions.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of SiCp/AZ91 composites processed by a combined processing method of equal channel angular pressing and rolling

Qiong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, SiCp/AZ91 composites with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained through a combined process of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and rolling. The composite processed with this method showed superior mechanical properties and improved ductility compared to the composite processed solely by rolling, thanks to the homogenized microstructure with refined grains and different crystallographic texture evolution during processing.

Microstructural, Mechanical, and Fracture Characterization of Metal Matrix Composite Manufactured by Accumulative Roll Bonding

G. S. Pereira et al.

Summary: The low-cost composite laminate produced by accumulative roll bonding showed significantly enhanced hardness, but only moderately improved tensile properties. This was mainly attributed to some degree of recrystallization, work-hardening relief due to periodic annealing, minimum grain refinement, and somewhat agglomerated carbide particles.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of LIBs under bending loads using acoustic emission and three-dimensional digital image correlation techniques. The results demonstrate that the bending modulus and stiffness of the battery increase with the state of charge, and also reveal the main types of damage and expansion process during bending failure. Additionally, the study provides a new method for in-situ monitoring of LIBs, overcoming previous monitoring method limitations.
