Comparison of in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activities of commercial fucoidans from Macrocystis pyrifera, Undaria pinnatifida, and Fucus vesiculosus

Maylla Maria Correia Leite Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared the antioxidant activities of three fucoidans from different seaweeds, and found that fucoidan from Macrocystis pyrifera exhibited the highest antioxidant activity. The fucoidans had low electron donation capacity and metal chelating ability, but showed good scavenging activity against hydroxyl radicals. In cell and zebrafish embryo experiments, all fucoidans protected cells from oxidative damage.

Phytosterols in Seaweeds: An Overview on Biosynthesis to Biomedical Applications

Soo-In Sohn et al.

Summary: Seaweed extracts are considered effective therapeutic alternatives due to their availability, low cost, eco-friendliness, and non-toxic nature, with bioactive constituents such as phytosterols offering medicinal benefits. Recent advances in phytosterol-based research have identified the potential contributions of seaweed-steroidal molecules as chemotherapeutic drugs, highlighting the need for up-to-date literature on their biosynthesis, pharmacological effects, and biomedical applications. This comprehensive review summarizes studies on seaweed types, structural determination of phytosterol molecules, their properties, biosynthetic pathways, mechanisms of action, and health benefits for the development of novel drugs and functional foods.

Algae-derived hydrocolloids in foods: applications and health-related issues

Yu-Chen Liao et al.

Summary: Hydrocolloids are a type of food additives widely used in the food industry to develop structure in food ingredients. Algae-derived hydrocolloids such as carrageenan, agar, and alginate are commonly used as thickening, gelling, and emulsifying agents. Despite the debate surrounding carrageenan, algal hydrocolloids are considered a safe alternative to synthetic additives.
