Contamination, spatial distribution, and source contribution of persistent organic pollutants in the soil of Guiyang city, China: a case study

Guanglong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the main persistent organic pollutants in the soil of Guiyang are DDTs, HCHs, and PAHs, with the highest levels of PAHs observed in areas with larger population densities and more developed industries. The data suggest that DDTs and HCHs have past and recent common inputs, while mixtures of combustion activities are the major sources of PAHs in the soil.

Research on the sustainable development process of low-carbon pilot cities: the case study of Guiyang, a low-carbon pilot city in south-west China

Tao Peng et al.

Summary: China plans to pursue low-carbon development in its pilot cities. Evaluation of low-carbon cities is a multi-objective and decision problem, requiring comprehensive evaluation index systems. Using Guiyang as a case study, economic development, social progress, and environmental quality have greatly improved, but low-carbon levels still need to be increased for sustainable development.

High-resolution monitoring of inland water bodies across China in long time series and water resource changes

Xiaowei Chuai et al.

Summary: This study accurately examines inland water bodies in China using high-resolution satellite imagery, statistical water resource data, and precipitation data. Results show that from 1980 to 2015, inland water body areas increased, with significant increases in reservoir and pond areas but minimal changes in lake and river areas. Different basins face various water resource utilization and environmental issues, with the Yellow River, Haihe River, and Songhua and Liaohe River Basins experiencing water shortages and pollution.

Goal programming model for optimal water allocation of limited resources under increasing demands

Ammar Ahmed Musa

Summary: A multi-objective model was applied to optimize water allocation in Saudi Arabia to meet increasing demands in various sectors. The study spanned from 2020 to 2050, with a focus on groundwater, surface water, desalinated water, and treated wastewater. The model aimed to satisfy water demands, control water quality, maximize allocation of specific water sources, and minimize extraction and overall cost.

Study on the division of main functional regions based on relative carrying capacity of resources: a case study of Guiyang, southwest China

Tao Peng et al.

Summary: The concept of main functional areas proposed by China breaks traditional notions of regional development based solely on economic aggregate and emphasizes ecological awareness and respect for natural environments. By analyzing the relationship between resource carrying capacity and main functional areas, a model based on relative resource carrying capacity was constructed, yielding positive results in Guiyang City.

Developing Growth Models of Stand Volume for Subtropical Forests in Karst Areas: A Case Study in the Guizhou Plateau

Yuzhi Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stand volume growth of dominant tree species in a subtropical karst area in Guizhou, and developed growth models based on environmental factors. It revealed that climatic factors and site factors significantly influence stand volume, with topsoil thickness and site quality degree having the strongest positive effect. The findings offer updated knowledge on environmental effects on stand volume growth in subtropical forests in karst areas, and the developed models are useful for forest management and planning, contributing to forest carbon storage assessments and global carbon cycling studies.

Improving Water Sustainability through Modeling Optimum Sites for Riparian Forest Reforestation

Daniel Henrique Alves Torres et al.

Summary: This research utilized a methodology integrating GIS, fuzzy logic, AHP, and sensitivity analysis to model the selection of riparian protected areas with successful riparian forest reforestation potential, using the Jacare river basin as a case study. The results indicated that areas with moderate reforestation potential prevail in the region, with significant portions of best sites forming environments that favor aquatic life development and ecological balance maintenance.

Ecological carrying capacity of alpine grassland in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau based on the structural dynamics method

Yi-ping Fang et al.

Summary: The study established a structural dynamics model to analyze the ecological carrying capacity (ECC) of alpine grassland ecosystems, revealing significant influences from factors like active layer thickness, NPP, precipitation, and air temperature, as well as anthropogenic factors. The ECC of alpine grassland displayed an increasing trend, with fluctuating sensitivity to major climate variables over time. In geographical scale, Tibet Autonomous Region showed higher sensitivity and fluctuations compared to Qinghai Province, providing important insights for effective adaptation of alpine ecosystems to climate change.

The effect of embayment complexity on ecological carrying capacity estimations in bivalve aquaculture sites

Ramon Filgueira et al.

Summary: This study uses a hydrodynamic model coupled with an ecological model to evaluate the effects of bivalve aquaculture on seston supply and assess ecological carrying capacity. The outcomes suggest that current aquaculture operations in Sober Island, Wine Harbour, and Whitehead are within the ecological carrying capacity of the ecosystem. The model's capability to explore hypothetical scenarios can be utilized as a tool to guide management decisions for new aquaculture sites.

Comprehensive evaluation and influencing factors of urban agglomeration water resources carrying capacity

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: Appropriate water resources carrying capacity is crucial for the sustainable development of urban agglomerations. This study calculated the WRCC index of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration and analyzed the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of factors affecting WRCC. The results showed that WRCC in the BTHUA is increasing but the carrying capacity index is not high, with nearly 50% of cities still in an overloaded state. The factors affecting WRCC exhibited notable spatiotemporal heterogeneity.

Comparative Study on Relative Fossil Energy Carrying Capacity in China and the United States

Zhili Zuo et al.

Summary: This study based on the revised theory of relative resource carrying capacity and introduced the concept of relative fossil energy carrying capacity to evaluate fossil energy sustainability between China and the United States. The comparative analysis showed significant differences in RFECC between the two countries, with China showing an inverted U-shaped trend and the US showing a U-shaped trend. The gap in RFECC has been widening, with China's economic RFECC better than the US, while environmental and population RFECC are better in the US than in China. Coal and oil are suggested as breakthrough points for sustainable fossil energy and development in China and the United States.
