Organic Cultivation and Deficit Irrigation Practices to Improve Chemical and Biological Activity of Mentha spicata Plants

Antonios Chrysargyris et al.

Summary: Intensive crop production and irrational use of fertilizers and agrochemicals may have negative impacts on product quality and sustainable water use in agriculture. Practices like organic cultivation and deficit irrigation are well recognized as sustainable approaches. In a study on spearmint plants, deficit irrigation led to decreased plant growth but increased antioxidant capacity. Different cultivation practices affected nutrient accumulation in the plants, with notable differences in nitrogen, potassium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper levels. Additionally, essential oil content decreased in organic and/or deficit treated plants, while deficit irrigation also impacted plant growth and delayed the formation of carvone from limonene. The essential oils showed bioactivity against a vineyard pest, suggesting their potential in integrated pest management systems.
