Influence of compaction pressure and Si3N4/ZrO2 reinforcement on the properties of aluminium hybrid composites

Aasiya Parveen et al.

Summary: Aluminium hybrid composites (AHCs) were developed in this study using powder metallurgy method, with varying weight percentages of Si3N4 and ZrO2 reinforcements. The SEM results showed uniform distribution of reinforcement and matrix particles, with accumulation of nano-size ZrO2 particles. With increasing compaction pressure and weight percentages of reinforcements, density and micro-hardness improved while porosity decreased. The highest hardness value was found to be 72 VHN for sample E at 500 MPa.

Influence of ultrasonic agitation on the abrasive wear characteristics of Al-Cu/2 vol% Grp composite

Ramendra Kumar Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, the abrasive wear behavior of an Al-4.4 wt% Cu composite reinforced with 2 vol% graphite particles was investigated. The composite was prepared through Ultrasonic Treatment (UT) to achieve a uniform distribution of reinforcement particles. Wear tests were conducted on composites with and without UT treatment, as well as on the base alloy. The results showed that the composite with UT treatment exhibited higher coefficient of friction and wear resistance at 5 and 10 Newton loads compared to the base alloy. However, at 15 and 20 N load, the composite had lower COF and wear resistance. Micro-plowing and micro-cutting were identified as the two wear mechanisms for both the base alloy and the composites.

Optimization of wear behaviour of Al7075/SiC/Al2O3 MMCs Using statistical method

M. Ravikumar et al.

Summary: Metal matrix composites are widely used in engineering applications for their improved mechanical and wear properties. This research focuses on fabricating hybrid MMCs by incorporating different wt. % of ceramic reinforcements into Al-7075 alloy through liquid metallurgical technique. The hardness of the composites was measured and found to increase with the reinforcement content. Pin on disc wear tests under dry sliding conditions were conducted, and the influence of wear parameters on wear loss and coefficient of friction was studied using ANOVA technique. The results showed that the wt. % of reinforcement has a significant impact on wear and COF. SEM and EDS analysis were used to investigate the wear mechanism.

Mechanical and corrosion behavior of SiC/Graphite/ZrO2 hybrid reinforced aluminum-based composites for marine environment

Sukriti Yadav et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical and corrosion behavior of aluminum-based composites reinforced with hybrid reinforcements in marine conditions. Results show that the 3% reinforcement composite has the optimum mechanical properties and minimum corrosion rate, with increased hardness and tensile strength compared to pure Al. The corrosion behavior of the composite in simulated seawater conditions revealed a pitting corrosion mechanism with the 3% reinforced composite having the least corrosion rate.

Fabrication and analysis of two-wheeler connecting rod for aluminium hybrid composites using finite element method

Aasiya Parveen et al.

Summary: This study developed a composite material Al/3 wt% Si3N4/4.5 wt% ZrO2 using powder metallurgy process and designed a connecting rod for TVS Apache 150 motor engine specifications using Solidworks software. The finite element method analysis in ANSYS Workbench showed a significant reduction in von-Mises stress for the developed composite material compared to existing composite materials.

Analysis and prediction of the tensile strength of aluminum alloy composite using statistical and artificial neural network technique

Mohammad Mohsin et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloy (Al-20Fe-5Cr) matrix-based aluminum oxide (Al2O3) reinforced composites were developed through powder metallurgy (P/M) process. The study analyzed the impact of compaction pressure and wt.% of Al2O3 on tensile strength and elongation. Results showed that tensile strength increased with the addition of Al2O3, while elongation decreased.
