Techno-economic analysis of renewable fuels for ships carrying bulk cargo in Europe

Boris Stolz et al.

Summary: To meet global climate targets, renewable energy carriers should replace fossil marine fuels. This study provides an initial evaluation of the techno-economic suitability of carbon-neutral fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, methane, methanol, and diesel produced from renewable electricity, for powering Europe's shipping fleet carrying bulk cargo. The results show that these carbon-neutral fuels can cover over 93% of the transport work, with a reduced cargo capacity of less than 3%. However, their use would result in an additional 4-8% of Europe's electricity consumption, and increase the total costs of ownership by a factor of 2-6 in 2030 compared to conventional operations.

Energy efficient decarbonisation strategy for the Danish transport sector by 2045

Mikkel Strunge Kany et al.

Summary: The Danish transport sector plans to reduce total emissions by 70% by 2030 and achieve full decarbonisation by 2045. Measures such as extensive electrification for passenger cars and controlling the growth rates of car and aircraft travel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41% in 2030. Sector integration and the production of electrofuels will be key in decarbonising aviation, shipping, and heavy-duty road transport.

Do electric vehicles need subsidies in the UK?

Georgina Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that some electric car models from mass market brands are close to reaching cost parity with traditional vehicles, but subsidies are needed for faster market penetration. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are not worth the investment, while subsidies are necessary for the mass market penetration of battery electric vehicles in the short term.
