Timely Thermal Runaway Prognosis for Battery Systems in Real-World Electric Vehicles Based on Temperature Abnormality

Da Li et al.

Summary: Hundreds of real-world electric vehicles (EVs) have experienced thermal-runaway-induced battery fire accidents, posing risks to life and property. To address this issue, a two-step approach combining modified extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) for temperature prediction and principal component analysis (PCA) and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) for abnormality detection is proposed. The XGBoost-PCA-DBSCAN achieves accurate 5-min-forward temperature prediction with mean square errors (mses) of 0.0729, 0.0594, 0.0747, and 0.0523 for different seasons. By modifying XGBoost, the mse of temperature prediction is reduced by 31.2%. Furthermore, the 35-min-forward thermal runaway prognosis provides sufficient response time for drivers to minimize life and property losses.
