Combined influence of compression ratio and exhaust gas recirculation on the diverse characteristics of the diesel engine fueled with novel palmyra biodiesel blend

Geddam Prasada Rao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of compression ratio and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on a diesel engine fueled with a blend of 20% Palmyra oil methyl ester (POME 20). The results show that increasing the compression ratio improves the thermal efficiency and reduces fuel consumption, but also leads to higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. EGR is a simple, cost-effective technique for reducing NOx emissions, and adding 10% EGR to the POME 20 blend resulted in a 23% reduction in NOx emissions compared to standard operating conditions.

A review on non-edible oil as a potential feedstock for biodiesel: physicochemical properties and production technologies

Marwan Abdul Hakim Shaah et al.

Summary: There is growing concern about finding an alternative to petroleum-derived fuels due to the depletion of fossil fuels, population growth, and urbanization. Biodiesel, derived from edible crops, faces limitations such as potential food supply depletion and high production costs, leading researchers to consider using non-edible oil as a feedstock, which presents a significant opportunity for biodiesel production.

Summary: This experimental study investigates the effects of compression ratio and combustion chamber geometry on the behavior of a direct injection compression-ignition engine. Increasing the compression ratio and using a toroidal combustion chamber geometry can improve thermal efficiency and reduce CO and HC emissions, but may lead to a slight increase in NOx emissions. Additionally, these adjustments significantly increase in-cylinder peak pressure and net heat release rate.
