Smart mucoadhesive buccal chitosan/HPMC scaffold for sore throat: In vitro, ex vivo and pharmacokinetic profiling in humans

Sana Hanif et al.

Summary: This study aimed to deliver tibezonium iodide (TBN) and lignocaine hydrochloride (LGN) as a mucoadhesive buccal delivery to relieve sore throat. By combining chitosan and hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), better mucoadhesive strength and sustained release were achieved. The results showed satisfactory drug release and residence time of the buccal scaffold in vitro and in volunteers.

Evaluation and Optimization of Prolonged Release Mucoadhesive Tablets of Dexamethasone for Wound Healing: In Vitro-In Vivo Profiling in Healthy Volunteers

Qurrat Ul Ain Javed et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to design and develop a novel strategy for evaluating the mucoadhesive potential of polymeric tablets of dexamethasone for local delivery against wounds. The mucoadhesive polymeric tablets were characterized via physicochemical, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo experiments. The optimized formulation exhibited maximum drug release and sufficient mucoadhesive strength, which effectively triggered and promoted wound healing.

Development and optimization of tibezonium iodide and lignocaine hydrochloride containing novel mucoadhesive buccal tablets: a pharmacokinetic investigation among healthy humans

Sana Hanif et al.

Summary: This study developed a buccal mucoadhesive delivery system based on chitosan for the local release of tibezonium iodide and lignocaine hydrochloride. The system exhibited optimal physical parameters and drug release performance, demonstrating good mucoadhesive strength and sustained release in vivo. It has the potential to be an effective and alternative option to conventional delivery.

Stimuli-Responsive Polymers for Transdermal, Transmucosal and Ocular Drug Delivery

Dmitriy Berillo et al.

Summary: Despite the conventional use of oral and intravenous routes for drug administration, they face limitations such as reduced bioavailability and invasiveness. Therefore, alternative delivery routes and modifications to drug formulations using stimuli-responsive polymers can improve drug release and bioavailability.

Formulation and Optimization of Sodium Alginate Polymer Film as a Buccal Mucoadhesive Drug Delivery System Containing Cetirizine Dihydrochloride

Krisztian Pamlenyi et al.

Summary: This study focused on formulating buccal mucoadhesive polymer films with sodium alginate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, glycerol, and cetirizine dihydrochloride. Investigating the physical and physical-chemical properties of the films revealed that glycerol decreased mucoadhesivity, cetirizine increased tensile strength, and the API dissolved uniformly in the films. The conclusions suggest that polymer films with 1% and 3% glycerol concentrations are suitable as a drug delivery system on buccal mucosa.

Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Compatibility between Acarbose and Common Excipients Used in the Development of Controlled Release Formulations

Aiesheh Gholizadeh-Hashjin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the compatibility of acarbose with common excipients, and found that EC, Carbopol 934, hydroxypropyl cellulose, etc. were incompatible with acarbose. It is recommended to avoid using these incompatible excipients when formulating controlled release formulations.
