Case study: risk associated to wearing silver or graphene nanoparticle-coated facemasks for protection against COVID-19

Carmen Estevan et al.

Summary: Facemasks have become mandatory in many developed countries to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with silver and graphene nanoparticles used as coatings to enhance antimicrobial properties. Long-term exposure to silver nanoparticles from facemasks is deemed safe, while the risk associated with graphene is considered very low or negligible. The risk of skin sensitisation and genotoxicity for both nanomaterials is also estimated to be negligible.

Graphene oxide-silver nanoparticle hybrid material: an integrated nanosafety study in zebrafish embryos

Aline M. Z. de Medeiros et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of graphene oxide-silver nanoparticle hybrid material in zebrafish embryos, considering factors such as natural organic matter and chorion membrane. The results demonstrated a dose-response acute toxicity of the nanohybrid, with significant impacts from the removal of chorion and presence of NOM. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the ingestion of graphene oxide by embryos, while silver nanoparticles played a role in mitigating toxicity effects. Understanding the influence of chorion membranes and NOM is crucial for standardizing testing in zebrafish embryo toxicity assessments.

A Study of Nanosilver Colloid Prepared by Electrical Spark Discharge Method and Its Antifungal Control Benefits

Kuo-Hsiung Tseng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the nanosilver colloid solution prepared by the electrical spark discharge method has a better antimicrobial effect compared to the standard silver ion solution. The nanoparticles in the solution continuously release Ag+ ions, leading to a more significant microbial control effect, especially against yeast, Aspergillus Niger, and Aspergillus Flavus.
