Patients Older 65 Years With Early Breast Cancer Prefer Intraoperative Radiation as a Locoregional Treatment Choice

Annie Tang et al.

Summary: Patients 65 years old or older with early endocrine-responsive breast cancer preferred to have intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) despite being informed of the lack of survival benefit. Factors such as age, race, language, and comorbidities did not affect patients' preference for IORT.

Single-dose intraoperative radiotherapy during lumpectomy for breast cancer: an innovative patient-centred treatment

Jayant S. Vaidya et al.

Summary: In the TARGIT-A trial, risk-adapted targeted intraoperative radiotherapy (TARGIT-IORT) was shown to be non-inferior to whole-breast external beam radiotherapy for local recurrence in breast cancer patients. Long-term outcomes showed no significant differences in breast cancer outcomes, but there were fewer deaths from non-breast cancer causes. It is recommended to consider including TARGIT-IORT in pre-operative consultations with eligible patients.

Summary: TARGIT-IORT is as effective as EBRT in all subgroups with a good prognosis for local recurrence after TARGIT-IORT. Non-breast cancer mortality is significantly lower in the TARGIT-IORT arm.
