A review of phase change heat transfer in shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) based on porous supports for thermal energy storage

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is effective in addressing energy supply-demand mismatch, but faces challenges of low thermal conductivity and leakage. Integrating porous supports and PCMs to fabricate shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) is one solution, with research on phase change heat transfer in porous ss-PCMs being crucial for system performance evaluation. Research gaps exist between phase change heat transfer and material preparation, and future studies should focus on numerical advancements and experimental investigations in this area.

Graft poly(ethylene glycol)-based thermosetting phase change materials networks with ultrahigh encapsulation fraction and latent heat efficiency

Xiaowei Fu et al.

Summary: The graft phase change materials (GPCMs) networks with pendent side chains exhibit superior encapsulation fraction and latent heat efficiency compared to backbone phase change materials (BPCMs) networks. By synthesizing GPCMs networks containing graft polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based side chains, higher normalized latent heat and efficiency were achieved. GPCMs also demonstrated good solid-solid phase change behavior, high thermal reliability, and stability, which were not found in traditional BPCMs.

Influences of PVA modification on performance of microencapsulated reversible thermochromic phase change materials for energy storage application

Xiaoye Geng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the mechanical properties and anti-permeability performance of microcapsules through shell modification. By adjusting the PVA/MF ratio, adding PVA-1788, and using different types of PVA, researchers were able to improve the thermal stability of microcapsules. Different types of PVA modification resulted in varying levels of stability and performance in MicroRTPCMs, with higher degrees of polymerization and alcoholysis leading to more stable composite shell structures. Overall, the research demonstrated the potential practical applications of MicroRTPCMs in areas such as thermoregulated fibers, thermal energy storage textiles, heat energy transfers, and energy-saving building materials.
