Microstructure evolution mechanisms and strength improvement of (6.5 vol% TiC+3.3 vol% Ti5Si3)/Ti6Al4V composites via heat treatments

Xiaoyu Huang et al.

Summary: By increasing the sintering temperature, the aggregation of particles in the composite was reduced and the size of particles was increased. The Ti5Si3 particles dissolved into the matrix, while TiC particles prevented the growth of the matrix. After solution treatment and aging treatment, the mechanical properties of the composite were significantly improved without a noticeable decrease in ductility.

Extreme hardening of titanium with colossal interstitial contents of nitrogen and oxygen

Frederik B. Kvaerndrup et al.

Summary: This study characterized homogenous thin foils of titanium with nitrogen and oxygen in interstitial solid solution using various methods and found that the hardening/strengthening achieved correlates with the change in lattice parameters and grain orientation. Mechanical properties were assessed using nanoindentation, yielding consistent results for nearly the full range of concentrations.

Roles of reinforcements in twin nucleation and nano-α precipitation in the hybrid TiB/TiC-reinforced titanium matrix composites during high-temperature fatigue

Xiaoyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of reinforcements in the microstructural evolution of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) during high-temperature fatigue, revealing a new phenomenon of twin nucleation. The presence of reinforcements enhances dislocation accumulation and promotes the rapid diffusion of elements, leading to an increase in local stress concentration and ultimately contributing to twin nucleation. This work contributes to a better understanding of the mechanism underlying TMC fracture during high-temperature fatigue.
