Three-dimensional attachment morphometry and volumetric changes of masticatory muscles after free fibular flap reconstruction of the mandibular condyle

Shuang Bai et al.

Summary: This retrospective case-series study aimed to investigate the attachment features and volumetric changes of masticatory muscles after free fibular flap reconstruction of the mandibular condyle. The study found that the lateral pterygoid muscle achieved reattachment in most cases, while the masseter muscle showed limited reattachment. The volume of masticatory muscles on the affected side decreased significantly after surgery, while on the normal side, it almost returned to the preoperative level. Further high-quality clinical trials are needed to determine the functional implications of masticatory muscle reattachment.

Spatial deviations of the temporomandibular joint after oncological mandibular reconstruction

W. -F. Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates and the preservation of the condyle or ramus on the spatial deviations of the TMJ after oncological mandibular reconstruction. The results showed that the use of 3D-printed plates improved the spatial accuracy of the TMJ. The preservation of the condyle had a significant impact on the TMJ deviations, while the removal of both the condyle and ramus caused more severe spatial interference.

Unexpected Change of Surgical Plans and Contingency Strategies in Computer-Assisted Free Flap Jaw Reconstruction: Lessons Learned From 98 Consecutive Cases

Jane J. Pu et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the rate of unexpected change of surgical plans in computer-assisted jaw reconstructions with osseous free flaps and discussed contingency strategies. The study included 98 consecutive cases and found that 5.1% of the patients needed intra-operative change of surgical plans. The study identified four clinical scenarios and concluded that comprehensive methodology can minimize the possibility of unexpected change of surgical plans.

Wei-fa Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates were found to improve the accuracy of oncologic head and neck reconstruction compared to conventional plates. The reconstruction accuracy was superior in terms of maxilla or mandible deviation and bilateral mandibular angles with 3D-printed plates. However, no significant differences were found in terms of osteotomy accuracy, intraoperative blood loss, total operative time, or length of hospital stay between the two groups.

Does the Use of Computer-Assisted Surgery Affect the Margin Status in Resections of Ameloblastoma?

Benjamin Palla et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of computer-assisted surgery did not compromise the margin status in surgical resections of ameloblastoma. There were fewer instances of close or positive margins in the CAS group compared to the non-CAS group, suggesting that CAS could potentially decrease the occurrence of close or positive margins.
