Preoperative spirometry and BMI in deep inspiration breath-hold radiotherapy: the early detection of cardiac and lung dose predictors without radiation exposure

Yutaro Koide et al.

Summary: This study found that preoperative spirometry and BMI are important predictors of mean heart and lung dose in deep inspiration breath-hold radiotherapy. Elderly patients and those with lower vital capacity may have larger predictive variations, but spirometry may be a substitute for lung volume measurement in free-breathing as a predictor of mean heart dose.

Cardio-oncology in Austria: cardiotoxicity and surveillance of anti-cancer therapies Position paper of the Heart Failure Working Group of the Austrian Society of Cardiology

Jutta Bergler-Klein et al.

Summary: Survival rates in cancer patients are improving due to advancements in oncological treatments. However, the short-term and long-term cardiovascular side effects play a crucial role in the overall outcomes. Cardiotoxicity can manifest as heart failure, treatment-resistant hypertension, acute coronary ischemia, thromboembolism, arrhythmia, and other conditions. Recent recommendations emphasize the importance of assessing baseline cardiac risks and implementing monitoring strategies. Early initiation of cardioprotective therapies and reassessment of cardiac function are recommended if left ventricular ejection fraction or myocardial strain decline during cancer treatment. Collaborative efforts between cardiology and oncology are essential for optimal management of cancer patients.

A Novel Radiotherapeutic Approach to Treat Bulky Metastases Even From Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Its Rationale and a Look at the Reliability of the Linear-Quadratic Model to Explain Its Radiobiological Effects

Gianluca Ferini et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel radiotherapy technique for the treatment of metastatic cSCC and attempted to explain its clinical outcome using mathematical radiobiological models. The results showed that the technique was effective in treating bulky metastases, and the host immune system may play a key role in the tumor response to radiation.

Advances in the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity-Driven Effects in Breast Cancers

Kuo Chen et al.

Summary: Obesity and chronic inflammation contribute to breast cancer growth and metastasis, involving multiple oncogenic and pro-inflammatory pathways. Diet and exercise interventions are essential in the treatment of obesity-induced breast cancer, improving overall quality of life and minimizing post-treatment complications.

Is prone free breathing better than supine deep inspiration breath-hold for left whole-breast radiotherapy? A dosimetric analysis

Xinzhuo Wang et al.

Summary: Prone compared with supine deep inspiration breath-hold (DiBH) was associated with a dosimetric gain in 62.1% of left-sided breast cancer patients. High pendulousness and moderately large breast predicted for the gain.

Patient-Specific Heart Constraint: A Tool for Optimization and Evaluation of Mean Heart Dose in Breast Cancer Patients

Rachel Ward et al.

Summary: Introduction of a patient-specific heart constraint (PSHC) can reduce mean heart dose (MHD) for breast radiation therapy (RT) patients, with the greatest benefit shown for left-sided treatments. Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) can reduce heart dose, although the effect is not significant.

How Much Daily Image-guided Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy Is Useful for Proctitis Prevention With Respect to Static Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy Supported by Topical Medications Among Localized Prostate Cancer Patients?

Gianluca Ferini et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of topical support therapy during radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer patients to compare the risk of radiation proctitis between static-intensity modulated radiotherapy (sIMRT) and Image-guided volumetric modulated arc therapy (IG-VMAT). Results showed that IG-VMAT was generally more effective in reducing proctitis compared to sIMRT with topical medications, although the differences were not clinically relevant. Topical medications may have a role in preventing radiation proctitis.

Role of the Combination of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitors (CDKI) and Radiotherapy (RT) in the Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC): Advantages and Risks in Clinical Practice

Ambrogio Gagliano et al.

Summary: The combination of CDKIs and RT can effectively control metastatic breast cancer, with varying levels of toxicity depending on the irradiation site. Favorable outcomes are seen in liver, spine, and brain lesions, while poorer outcomes are observed in thoracic lesions or sites close to viscera, with controversial evidence for bone treatment.

Summary: The Markov model predicted that IMPT with DIBH was cost-effective for selected left-sided breast cancer patients where IMRT resulted in a significantly greater dose to normal tissue. The model may serve as a means of evaluating the cost-effectiveness of IMPT on an individual patient basis.
