High Charlson Comorbidity Index Score is associated with early fracture-related complication for internal fixation of neck of femur fractures

Ronald Man Yeung Wong et al.

Summary: The incidence of geriatric hip fractures is a major public health concern globally. This study found that the Age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (ACCI) is associated with increased fracture-related complications in neck of femur fractures. The authors recommend considering direct arthroplasty surgery for certain patient groups based on the ACCI score.

Summary: This study computationally evaluated the contact pressure between UHMWPE acetabular cup and metal femoral head, and found that Ti6Al4V-on-UHMWPE can reduce cumulative contact pressure.

Predicting in-hospital mortality for dementia patients after hip fracture surgery - A comparison between the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index

Pei-Ling Tang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a predictive model for in-hospital mortality in elderly dementia patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. Analysis of data from 8080 patients aged 65 and above revealed that combining the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) with factors like age and gender resulted in better prediction of in-hospital mortality.

Relationship between Charlson comorbidity index, early recovery and 2-year mortality in elderly patients undergoing surgical treatment of inter-trochanteric fractures: a retrospective analysis

Xu Jianda et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of Charlson Comorbidity Index scores on early recovery and 2-year mortality in elderly patients undergoing surgical treatment for inter-trochanteric fractures. Results indicated that the Charlson comorbidity index may not be a reliable indicator for 2-year mortality in this patient population. Factors such as blood loss, first time out of bed, and complications during surgery were found to be more significant predictors of survival rates.

Validation of the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) in Patients with Hip Fracture: A Prospective Cohort Study in the Netherlands

Veronique A. J. I. M. van Rijckevorsel et al.

Summary: The study validated the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) in predicting 30-day mortality for hip fracture patients in the Netherlands. While the NHFS showed reasonable accuracy in predicting mortality, the observed 30-day mortality in the study population was slightly higher than the NHFS predictions.
