An experimental study of photo-oxidation of Fe(II): Implications for the formation of Fe(III) (hydro)oxides on early Mars and Earth

Haruhisa Tabata et al.

Summary: The photo-oxidation of aqueous Fe(II) to Fe(III) likely played a role in the formation of iron oxide deposits on early Mars and Earth. The quantum yield of this photo-oxidation process increases with pH and is wavelength-dependent. Photo-oxidation may explain the amounts of Fe(III) (hydro)oxides in Gale sediments and was more intense in Archean oceans than previously thought.

Reconciling evidence of oxidative weathering and atmospheric anoxia on Archean Earth

Aleisha C. Johnson et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests the presence of oxygen production and accumulation on Earth's surface before the Great Oxidation Event, but quantifying early oxygen levels has proven challenging. By analyzing the distribution and isotopic composition of molybdenum in ancient sedimentary records, researchers have been able to calculate lower limits for atmospheric oxygen levels and production fluxes during the Archean era. The findings indicate that oxygen levels in the Archean were extremely low compared to a lifeless Earth system, highlighting the complexity of early atmospheric oxygen dynamics.
