Spin-State Manipulation of Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework with Enhanced Metal-Oxygen Covalency for Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Qingliang Lv et al.

Summary: Aprotic Li-O-2 batteries with high energy density have been hindered by sluggish reaction kinetics and voltage hysteresis at the cathode. In this study, we regulate the spin state of partial Ni2+ metal centers in a conductive nickel catecholate framework to overcome these challenges. The spin-state modulation enhances nickel-oxygen covalency, accelerates the oxygen redox kinetics, and promotes the formation of nanosheet-like Li2O2 during discharge. The resulting Ni-III-NCF battery exhibits reduced voltage gaps, superior rate capability, and long cycling stability.
