Ecological security assessment for megacities in the Yangtze River basin: Applying improved emergy-ecological footprint and DEA-SBM model

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: The environmental problems caused by intensive economic development and rapid urbanization have hindered the sustainable development of the social economy. This study assesses the ecological security levels in eight developed megacities located in the Yangtze River basin in China. The results provide policy recommendations for decision-makers to formulate strategies for ecological security and sustainable development. The study's findings offer a scientific reference for other megacities to mitigate ecological pressures by considering their local situations.

Spatial-temporal variation and nonlinear prediction of environmental footprints and comprehensive environmental pressure in urban agglomerations

Yizhong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the water-carbon-ecological footprints and a nonlinear grey Bernoulli projection model were used to evaluate the comprehensive environmental pressure in the urban agglomerations of Cheng-Yu district, the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the Yangtze River Delta. The results showed that these regions experienced ecological deficit and an increase in comprehensive environmental pressure. The coupling coordination degree of environmental footprints was improved in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yangtze River Delta, but not in the urban agglomerations of Cheng-Yu district.

Multi-scenario simulation and ecological risk analysis of land use based on the PLUS model: A case study of Nanjing

Lina Gao et al.

Summary: With the expansion of economic activities in cities, the ecological environment is gradually being destructed, and urban planning plays an important role in solving these issues. This study uses the PLUS model to simulate and evaluate the land use situation of Nanjing in 2025 under different scenarios, finding that the ecological risk levels vary under different scenarios. In densely populated areas with concentrated built-up land, attention should be paid to ecological environment protection and the construction of ecological corridors.

Three-dimensional ecological footprint based on ecosystem service value and their drivers: A case study of Urumqi

Penghui Li et al.

Summary: Natural capital is crucial for human survival and sustainable development. A scientific framework is necessary for evaluating regional natural capital consumption and capacity. Traditional models may not fully capture the supply-demand relationship for ecological footprint based on ecosystem services. The study in Urumqi, China, showed the need for quadruple land area to meet residents' consumption demands sustainably, with an improved model providing more accurate accounting and better consideration of land versatility, aiming to promote sustainable development in the city and similar regions.

What abates ecological footprint in BRICS-T region? Exploring the influence of renewable energy, non-renewable energy, agriculture, forest area and financial development

Muhammad Usman et al.

Summary: The study found significant impacts of agriculture value-added, non-renewable energy, and financial development on the ecological footprint of BRICS-T countries, while forestry and renewable energy utilization contribute to improving environmental quality in the long run. Causality analysis reveals the presence of a feedback effect between agriculture, financial development, and ecological footprint, as well as a growth hypothesis from forest area, renewable, and non-renewable energy utilization to ecological footprint.

Pathways to progress sustainability: an accurate ecological footprint analysis and prediction for Shandong in China based on integration of STIRPAT model, PLS, and BPNN

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the growth of ecological footprint in Shandong province has led to an ecological deficit, population growth and urbanization rate expansion will increase the ecological footprint. Technological progress can promote the expansion of ecological footprint in the short term. In addition, the prediction results show that the ecological footprint of Shandong province in the policy-regulation scenario is far less than that of the business-as-usual scenario.
