Management of neurogenic bladder dysfunction in children update and recommendations on medical treatment

Cristian Sager et al.

Summary: This article discusses the medical management of neurogenic bladder in children. Adequate evaluation and treatment choices can prevent renal parenchymal damage caused by neurogenic bladder in children. Clean intermittent catheterization and antimuscarinic drugs are commonly used treatment methods, while receptor-selective pharmacotherapy can reduce the need for reconstructive procedures.

Urodynamic characteristics of neurogenic bladder in newborns with myelomeningocele and refinement of the definition of bladder hostility: Findings from the UMPIRE multi-center study

Stacy T. Tanaka et al.

Summary: The study presented baseline urodynamic findings from the UMPIRE protocol for infants with myelomeningocele, identified inadequacies in the original classification scheme, and proposed a refined definition of bladder hostility. With further standardization of interpretation, the study achieved 100% concurrence on bladder categorization. The revised categorization system grouped normal and safe categories together as low risk, and excluded detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) from the high-risk category.
