Infrared thermography as a modality for tracking cutaneous temperature change and post-mortem interval in the critical care setting

Peter Y. Chan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential use of cutaneous facial temperature change as a marker of postmortem interval using an infrared camera. Significant differences in facial temperature were observed at 30, 60, and 90 minutes postmortem compared to baseline. The results suggest that infrared thermography shows promise in identifying temperature changes immediately before and after death.

The time of death in Dutch court; using the Daubert criteria to evaluate methods to estimate the PMI used in court

Tamara Gelderman et al.

Summary: This study examined the methods and experts used to estimate post-mortem interval in Dutch jurisprudence from 2010 to 2019. It found that the Henssge nomogram and entomological methods met the Daubert criteria, but their effectiveness depended on being applied by the right forensic expert.

Estimation of time since death after a post-mortem change in ambient temperature: Evaluation of a back-calculation approach

Marcel Bovenschen et al.

Summary: The temperature-based Henssge method for death time estimation may not be reliable when there is a sudden change in ambient temperature. In the study, it was found that bodies tended to cool down slower in cooling storage than predicted by back-calculation, leading to significant discrepancies between calculated and actual body temperatures. The proposed method should be used with caution in addressing changes in ambient temperature.

Individualised and non-contact post-mortem interval determination of human bodies using visible and thermal 3D imaging

Leah S. Wilk et al.

Summary: The study combines photogrammetry and TFD modeling to develop an individualized approach for PMI reconstruction in bodies in arbitrary postures. Utilizing thermal photogrammetry, this approach also represents the first non-contact method for PMI reconstruction.
