Creep performance of carburized 316H stainless steel at 550 °C

J. Eaton-Mckay et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the creep behavior of two ex-service type 316H austenitic stainless steel casts under different Mn contents and pre-carburization conditions. It was found that the presence of a sub-surface carburized layer can reduce the minimum creep rate at low stresses, but can lead to crack evolution and increased cracking at higher stresses, impacting the materials' creep performance. These results highlight the importance of considering the effects of the service environment on structural assessment procedures for high temperature applications.

Summary: The microstructural changes and surface properties such as hardness, wear, and corrosion resistance of powder bed fusion-produced maraging steel grade 18Ni300 were investigated after plasma nitriding at different temperatures. The study found that higher nitriding temperatures lead to the formation of cracks in the nitride layer, but their impact on the static mechanical properties is negligible.

Laser Defocusing Effect on the Microstructure and Defects of 17-4PH Parts Additively Manufactured by SLM at a Low Energy Input

Paola Leo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure, defects, hardness, and tensile strength of 17-4PH specimens manufactured using the SLM technique, showing that adjusting the defocus parameter is crucial for producing parts with good mechanical properties. The results reveal that the amount of austenitic phase and grain size varied with defocusing, while the percentage of defective area was less than 0.25%, and the analyzed defocus distance did not affect the number and average size of defects.

The effect of post-processing heat treatment on the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Qi Chao et al.

Summary: Additively manufactured 316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to various heat treatments to study the evolution of residual stress, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Significant compressive residual stress was revealed in the as-built condition, with stress relief achieved at different temperatures. Microstructural changes, such as recrystallization, coarsening of nano-inclusions, and precipitation of embrittling phases, were observed during the heat treatment process, impacting the material's ductility and strength. The study established important relationships between heat treatment, properties, and microstructural changes for the structural application of SLM 316L.
