High solid-solution strengthening mechanism of a novel aluminum-lithium alloy fabricated by electromagnetic near-net shape technology

Shiju Li et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution and precipitation strengthening behavior of Al-Li alloy manufactured by traditional casting, twin-roll casting (TRC) and electromagnetic twin-roll casting (E-TRC) were systematically investigated. The results show that the high cooling rate of the TRC process makes more alloying elements dissolve in the alpha(Al) matrix and improve the supersaturated solid solubility of the alloy. The electromagnetic oscillation field (EOF) in the TRC process enhances the mixing capability and diffusion ability of the solute atoms and inhibits the recrystallization of deformed microstructure, resulting in reduced macro-segregation and refined solidified microstructure. E-TRC increases the intragranular solid-solution capacity of the solute, leading to more and finer strengthening phases in the aging process, greatly improving the aging strengthening effect and significantly increasing the strength of the Al-Li alloy.

Effects of wet shot peening on microstructures and mechanical properties of a 2060-T8 aluminum-lithium alloy

Xuefei Tao et al.

Summary: In this study, wet shot peening (WSP) was used to modify the microstructures and mechanical properties of an aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy. Numerical simulation and experimental methods were employed to investigate the effects of WSP. The results showed that the gradient distributions of plastic strain and strain rate induced by WSP were the primary factors determining the microstructural evolution and deformation mechanisms. Experimental characterization revealed that WSP significantly improved the yield strength, tensile strength, and microhardness of the alloy, but reduced its total elongation. The non-uniform deformation of WSP also resulted in a gradient hierarchical microstructure that promoted the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations, leading to extra hardening effects.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different loading rates on creep aging treatment of Al-Li alloy, finding that the loading rate effectively influences the creep aging behavior of the materials. A higher loading rate is beneficial for the accumulation of creep strain and promotes the nucleation of T-1 phase, contributing to improved material properties.

Effects of heat treatment on the microstructure, texture and mechanical property anisotropy of extruded 2196 Al-Cu-Li alloy

Xiaoxue Chen et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and microstructures of extruded 2196 Al-Cu-Li alloy plates under different heat treatment parameters are tested and characterized along different directions, revealing that the mechanical property anisotropy is significantly affected by heat treatment due to differences in grain morphology, microtexture, recrystallization degree and secondary particles characteristics in different directions. The anisotropy is mainly influenced by the increase of number density and distribution uniformity of T-1 phase after aging treatment, as well as the elimination of PFZ and the increase of grain boundary strength.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the localized corrosion behavior and microstructure of an Al-2.23Cu-0.96Li (wt%) alloy using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the GPB zones in the alloy do not significantly affect the overall propagation direction of crystallographic corrosion, but are closely related to the formation of nanoscale localized corrosion morphology in the crystallographic corrosion.
