Smartphone-Assisted Colorimetric Determination of Iron Ions in Water by Using Anthocyanin from Ruellia tuberosa L. as a Green Indicator and Application for Hands-on Experiment Kit

Rattapol Meelapsom et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple experiment kit for colorimetric quantification of ferric (III) ion (Fe3+) using anthocyanin extracted from Ruellia tuberosa L. as a green indicator in an aqueous medium. The experiment involves extracting anthocyanin using hot water, forming a colored Fe3+-anthocyanin complex on a homemade plate, capturing the color with a smartphone, and measuring the color intensity using ImageJ software. The method enables detection of Fe3+ at low concentrations and shows good linearity within a certain concentration range. The concentrations of Fe3+ determined using this method were comparable to those obtained with UV-visible spectrophotometry. Moreover, the extracted anthocyanin remained stable for two months when stored at 4 degrees C. The experiment improved students' understanding of oxidation-reduction and determination of iron, as assessed by a diagnostic conceptual test.

Utilization of nano-biosorbents based on pine needles and banana peel for methylene blue removal: equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamic study, and application

Asim Yaqub et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetically modified nano-biosorbents of pine needles (MCPN) and banana peels (MCBP) were successfully synthesized and used for methylene blue dye adsorption from wastewater. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model and the corresponding adsorption isotherm models. The results demonstrated that magnetically modified biosorbents can be an eco-friendly method to improve water quality and address waste management issues.

Effect of precipitating agents on the magnetic and structural properties of the synthesized ferrimagnetic nanoparticles by co-precipitation method

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effect of four different precipitating agents on the structural and magnetic properties of synthesized ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The results show that NH3 in an alcohol solution as a precipitating agent exhibits higher magnetic properties but a longer response time. On the other hand, NaOH in an aqueous solution provides a shorter reaction time and lower cost, but the particle surface and magnetic characteristics are inferior.

Synthesis and characterization of ZnSe nanorods by coprecipitation method

Prerna Gupta et al.

Summary: This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanorods using the co-precipitation method. The synthesized ZnSe nanorods exhibit a hexagonal structure with dimensions ranging from 90 nm to 170 nm in diameter and 750 nm in length. Optical band gap analysis using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy confirms the strong and broad absorption band in the wavelength range of 320 nm to 470 nm, corresponding to the band gap of ZnSe nanorods. Photoluminescence spectra indicate emissions in the blue light range, making the material suitable for blue LEDs in clinical and optoelectronic devices.
