Biases in estimating b-values from small earthquake catalogues: how high are high b-values?

G-M Geffers et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential biases in estimating higher b-values in earthquake catalogues when the data quality does not allow for a distinction between scale-free behavior and finite size roll-off. It finds that assuming the wrong model and having a too high m(c) can lead to systematically higher b-values than the underlying true distribution, changing our understanding of the accuracy of b-values in different dynamic ranges.

Earthquakes Induced by Wastewater Disposal near Musreau Lake, Alberta, 2018-2020

Tianyang Li et al.

Summary: This study unveils a significant spatiotemporal correlation between earthquakes and nearby wastewater disposal wells near Musreau Lake in Alberta, Canada. A linear predictive relationship model is proposed for fault rupture direction and distance to the Rocky Mountains based on a statistical analysis of induced earthquake clusters in the western Canada sedimentary basin (WCSB). This observation-based model provides a valuable reference for future assessments of seismic hazard in the WCSB.

Earthquakes Triggered by Fluid Diffusion and Boosted by Fault Reactivation in Weiyuan, China Due to Hydraulic Fracturing

Minhan Sheng et al.

Summary: This study enhances our understanding of induced earthquakes by hydraulic fracturing by providing evidence from seismic data in the Weiyuan shale gas block in China. It confirms that the earthquakes in this area are induced by hydraulic fracturing and identifies pre-existing faults near the clusters. The study also suggests that fluid diffusion processes are the primary drivers of seismicity in this region.

Slip Characteristics of Induced Earthquakes: Insights From the 2015 Mw 4.0 Guthrie, Oklahoma Earthquake

Colin N. Pennington et al.

Summary: This study investigates the control of injection, prior seismicity, and fault properties on the rupture growth and propagation of induced earthquakes. The analysis reveals that the slip distribution of the Guthrie M-w 4.0 earthquake is influenced by factors such as low pore pressure changes, static stress changes, and the initial stress distribution and fault strength. Comparisons with other strike-slip events suggest that reactivated faults exhibit different slip distributions compared to active regions, with the initial stress distribution and fault strength being the primary controlling factors. Overall, pore pressure perturbations and earthquake interactions enhance the slip distribution, but the fault's initial stress and strength state ultimately control it.

Experimental Investigation of Mechanical Properties and Failure Behavior of Fluid-Saturated Hot Dry Rocks

Daobing Wang et al.

Summary: Saturation increases pore pressure in rocks and promotes crack propagation in hydraulic fracturing, while saturated fluid can decrease crack damage stress ratio, fracture toughness and cohesive strength, and nano-emulsion is more advantageous for enhancing fracture complexity. This study sheds light on the mechanisms of complex fracture formation in deep geothermal reservoirs through experimental comparisons of mechanical differences between fluid-saturated and dry rock samples.

Characterization of injection-induced seismicity at north central Oklahoma, USA

R. Rajesh et al.

Summary: The characteristics of two moderate injection-induced seismicity earthquake sequences in Oklahoma, USA were investigated, showing temporal changes in b values and a correlation between foreshock b values and main shock occurrences. The largest aftershock to main shock magnitude difference observed in one sequence could be linked to a drastic reduction in injection rates. The overall appearance of induced seismicity in Oklahoma resembles a swarm due to multiple injection wells operating with varying fluid amounts.

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Seismotectonic State of Injection-Induced Seismicity Clusters in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin

Ramin M. H. Dokht et al.

Summary: The observations in western Canada suggest that earthquakes are related to hydraulic fracturing and wastewater disposal. By analyzing induced events in regions with low background seismicity levels, clusters with different earthquake magnitudes and injection scenarios were identified using density-based spatial and soft clustering algorithms. The study also found a linear relationship between the number of induced earthquakes and cumulative injection volume, which can help predict the occurrence probability of earthquakes and mitigate risks associated with large magnitude induced events.

High-Resolution Imaging of the ML 2.9 August 2019 Earthquake in Lancashire, United Kingdom, Induced by Hydraulic Fracturing during Preston New Road PNR-2 Operations

Tom Kettlety et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing operations in Lancashire, UK in August 2019 induced felt earthquakes, leading to a government ban on shale gas fracking. Analysis of microseismic observations revealed the growth of hydraulic fractures and their interaction with preexisting structures. The activated fault's orientation within the stress field played a key role in controlling the severity of induced seismicity.
