Open-hardware design and characterization of an electrostatic aerosol precipitator

Sabin Kasparoglu et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design and characterization of an electrostatic precipitator for aerosol sampling. The device uses open-source hardware and software components, and can be assembled with standard tools. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to quantify the flow field and the transfer function associated with partial transmission is characterized through modeling and experiments. The device can effectively remove charged particles of different sizes and is expected to increase the accessibility of the technique.

The Role of Cloud Processing for the Ice Nucleating Ability of Organic Aerosol and Coal Fly Ash Particles

Kevin Kilchhofer et al.

Summary: Ice nucleating particles are a small portion of tropospheric aerosol, but play a crucial role in cloud microphysical processes. This study found that atmospheric aging can impact the ice nucleation abilities of aerosol particles, with some particles showing enhanced heterogeneous ice nucleation activity after cloud processing. Inorganic aerosol particles exhibit stronger ice nucleation activity in their unprocessed state compared to organic aerosol, but their activity decreases after cloud processing.

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality

Shan Gu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of future urban greening programs that increase biogenic VOC emissions on urban air quality, offsetting the benefits of reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions. Therefore, urban greening projects need to consider both anthropogenic and biogenic VOC contributions to secondary pollution, and should choose vegetation types with low VOC emissions to prevent further degradation of urban air quality.

Is Ice Formation by Sea Spray Particles at Cirrus Temperatures Controlled by Crystalline Salts?

Ryan J. Patnaude et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ice nucleating ability of sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles and their primary constituent sodium chloride (NaCl) at temperatures below 235 K. Results show that above 220 K, most NaCl and SSA particles freeze via homogeneous nucleation at high water relative humidities, while below 220 K, a strong heterogeneous freezing phenomenon occurs. The calculations suggest that particle size does not determine the efficiency of freezing for NaCl and SSA particles, indicating the potential significance of SSAs as ice nucleating particles in cirrus temperatures.

Summary: The study reveals that surrogates of boreal forest secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles only promote homogeneous ice formation, and the effect of homogeneous freezing is influenced by preconditioning humidity rather than the oxidative age of the SOA.

High homogeneous freezing onsets of sulfuric acid aerosol at cirrus temperatures

Julia Schneider et al.

Summary: Homogeneous freezing of aqueous sulfuric acid aerosol particles was studied through laboratory experiments at the AIDA cloud simulation chamber. The results showed deviations from the water activity criterion-based predictions at lower temperatures, but agreement at higher temperatures. The ice saturation ratios of sulfuric acid aerosol particles increased with decreasing temperatures, impacting model predictions of cirrus cloud occurrence.

Ice nucleation ability of ammonium sulfate aerosol particles internally mixed with secondary organics

Barbara Bertozzi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ice nucleation ability of internally mixed particles composed of crystalline ammonium sulfate (AS) and secondary organic material (SOM) at temperatures between -50 and -65 degrees C. The results show that the ice nucleation ability of mixed AS / SOM particles is strongly dependent on particle morphology. Further research is needed to investigate the impact of atmospheric aging and cloud processing on the morphology and related ice nucleation ability of internally mixed particles.

Toward closure between predicted and observed particle viscosity over a wide range of temperatures and relative humidity

Sabin Kasparoglu et al.

Summary: This study compares predicted and observed viscosities of sucrose and citric acid, using literature data on viscosity and glass transition temperature as a function of water content to constrain fragility parameterization. Measurements of sub-100 nm particle viscosities using the dimer relaxation method extend the available data to -28 degrees C. Predicted relationships align well with observations at room temperature and temperatures warmer than -28 degrees C, but discrepancies are observed at colder temperatures for sucrose particles. Simulations suggest that these deviations may be due to kinetic limitations associated with water uptake at dimer relaxation timescales. Equilibrium phase-state diagrams for sucrose and citric acid have been updated based on available information.
